North Warning System
The North Warning System (NWS, ) is a joint United States and Canadian early-warning radar system for the atmospheric air defense of North America. It provides surveillance of airspace from potential incursions or attacks from across North America's polar region. It replaced the Distant Early Warning Line system in the late 1980s. Overview The NWS consists of both long range AN/FPS-117 and short range AN/FPS-124 surveillance radars, operated and maintained by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). There are 13 long range sites and 36 short range sites. In Canada, the station sites are owned or leased by the Government of Canada, which also owns most of the infrastructure. A tripwire is a passive triggering mechanism. Typically, a wire or cord is attached to a device for detecting or reacting to physical movement. Military applications Such tripwires may be attached to one or more minesespecially fragmentation or bounding minesin order to increase the area where triggering may occur. Trip wires are frequently used in booby trapswhere either a tug on the wire, or the release of tension on it, will trigger the explosives. Soldiers sometimes detect the presence of tripwires by spraying the area with Silly String. Cartwright Long Range Radar Site
Cartwright Long Range Radar Site (LAB-6) is a Royal Canadian Air Force Long Range Radar Site located east-northeast of CFB Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. Facilities The facility contains a long range, phased array AN/FPS-117 3-dimensional air search surveillance radar that was installed in November 1998 as part of the North Warning System.
