North American Football Confederation
The North American Football Confederation (), abbreviated as NAFC, was the governing body of association football in North America from 1946 to 1961, and a predecessor confederation of CONCACAF. Founded in 1946 under the president Carlos Alonso who was elected on 19 December 1946 in Havana. NAFC merged with Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol, CCCF to found the current CONCACAF in 1961. The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, abbreviated as CONCACAF ( ; typeset for branding purposes since 2018 as Concacaf), is one of FIFA's six continental governing bodies for association football. Its 41 member associations represent countries and territories mainly in North America, including the Caribbean and Central America, and, for geopolitics, geopolitical reasons, 3 nations from the Guianas Subregion#South America, subregion of South America-Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana (an overseas department and region, overseas region of French Fifth Republic, France). The Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (Central American Football Union), more commonly known by the acronym UNCAF, represents the national football teams of Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The Campeonato Centroamericano () was an international club competition organized by CCCF and NAFC, the two predecessor confederations of CONCACAF, as its top regional football tournament. It was the first official international competition for clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The tournament was held in 1959 and 1961. The CCCF Championship was an association football competition organized by CCCF as its top regional tournament for men's senior national teams from Central America and the Caribbean. History The regional competition was born in 1938, in Panama City, with the founding of the Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol (), but the outbreak of the Second World War, a year later, prevented the first championship from taking place. The initiative, at first, did not have great acceptance in May 1941, during the opening tournament in the Costa Rican capital San José, as only five teams were registered.
