Njiko Igbo Movement
The Njiko Igbo Movement is a non-partisan and apolitical initiative spearheaded by Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu to help secure Nigeria's presidential seat for a citizen of Igbo origin. The Igbos, who some pundits believe remain widely resented in Nigeria due to their prominent role in the Nigerian Civil War, have only held the presidency for six months since the country's independence. Despite the seeming political pendulum in Nigeria, according to which the presidency is swapped between the members of different regions on an alternating basis, Dr. Kalu has stated that the Igbos remain a political non-entity and third-class citizens who have not been provided the opportunity to hold the country's leading political office. Orji Uzor Kalu
Orji Uzor Kalu (born 21 April 1960) is a Nigerian politician and businessperson who is a Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, He also serves as the Chief Whip of the House of Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. He served as the Governor of Abia State, Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. Kalu is the chairman of SLOK Holding and the '' Daily Sun'' and ''New Telegraph'' newspapers in Nigeria. Prior to his election, he served as the chairman of the Borno Water Board and the chairman of the Cooperative and Commerce Bank Limited. Kalu was also a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and the chairman of the PPA Board of Trustees. He was the party's presidential candidate in the April 2007 general election. Igbo People
The Igbo people ( , ; also spelled Ibo" and formerly also ''Iboe'', ''Ebo'', ''Eboe'', * * * ''Eboans'', ''Heebo''; natively ) are an ethnic group in Nigeria. They are primarily found in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. A sizable Igbo population is also found in Delta and Rivers States. Large ethnic Igbo populations are found in Cameroon, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea, as well as outside Africa. There has been much speculation about the origins of the Igbo people, which are largely unknown. Geographically, the Igbo homeland is divided into two unequal sections by the Niger River—an eastern (which is the larger of the two) and a western section. Nigerian Civil War
The Nigerian Civil War (6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970), also known as the Nigerian–Biafran War or the Biafran War, was a civil war fought between Nigeria and the Republic of Biafra, a secessionist state which had declared its independence from Nigeria in 1967. Nigeria was led by General Yakubu Gowon, while Biafra was led by Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka "Emeka" Odumegwu Ojukwu. Biafra represented the nationalist aspirations of the Igbo ethnic group, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the federal government dominated by the interests of the Muslim Hausa-Fulanis of Northern Nigeria. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded the United Kingdom's formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Emmanuel Onwe
Emmanuel Onwe is a lawyer, human rights activist, newspaper columnist, and former member of the Nigerian Senate. He is presently the Commissioner for Information in Nigeria's Ebonyi State. He is also a founding and executive member of the Njiko Igbo Movement. Onwe supports the need for transparency and non-politically driven anti-corruption reforms in Nigeria. He has stated that internal squabbles continue to paralyse the government and "if gone unchecked, could result in national paralysis and the tragic death of hope itself." Background and education Onwe was born in Ebonyi State. He received his early education at Our Lady of Fatima (later renamed the Community Primary School) in Ikwo and the Presbyterian Secondary School, Abakaliki in Anambra State.
