Ali Mohammed Baqir Al-Nimr
Ali Mohammed Baqir al-Nimr ( ar, علي محمد باقر النمر; born 20 December 1994) is a Saudi Arabian political prisoner who participated in the Saudi Arabian protests during the Arab Spring as a teenager. He was arrested in February 2012 and sentenced to death in May 2014, having previously awaited ratification of his sentence by King Salman of Saudi Arabia, which was to be carried out by beheading and crucifixion respectively. Ali's trial was considered unfair by Professor of Human Rights Law Christof Heyns, and Amnesty International, as well as French President François Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who called for the execution to be stopped. Ali is the nephew of Sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr, who was one of the 47 executed citizens during the 2016 Saudi Arabian mass execution. Amy Nimr
Amy Nimr (1898–1974), also known as Amy Smart, was an Egyptian-born artist, writer and patron of the arts. She is known for her association with the Cairo-based Art and Liberty Group. Early life and education Amy Nimr was born in Cairo to an upper-class family. Her official birth record states that she was born in 1907 but many believe it is more likely that she was born on 9 August 1898. Although she is Egyptian in nationality, Nimr's mother, Ellen Eynaud, was British, French and Austrian and her father, Faris Nimr, was of Lebanese-Syrian origin. Her father was also a famous "media mogul" who, in 1879 with his partner, founded the scientific and literary periodical ''al-Muqataf.'' Later in 1889, after moving to Egypt from Beirut, they founded the evening newspaper ''al-Muqattam.'' Growing up, Nimr received a predominantly Western education. Faris Nimr
Faris Nimr (; 1856–1951), was a pioneer Lebanese journalist and intellectual. He cofounded ''Al Muqattam'', an Arabic, Cairo-based newspaper. Early life and education Nimr was born in 1856 in Hasbaya, Lebanon. He hailed from a Protestant family. His father was killed in the 1860 civil conflict in Mount Lebanon, and he moved with his mother to Beirut, then to Jerusalem. They returned to Hasbaya in 1868. Nimr graduated from the Syrian College in Beirut in 1874, and worked at the newly created Lee Observatory under Doctor Cornelius Van Dyck, before becoming the observatory manager himself. In 1890 he graduated with a doctorate in philosophy from New York University. Career Following his graduation Nimr worked at the American College in Beirut as a lecturer. In 1876, he founded the monthly Arabic popular science magazine '' Al Muqtataf'' with Yaqub Sarruf in Beirut. Mek Nimr
El Mek Nimr, also known as Nimr Muhammad, (c. 1785 to 1846) was the last ''mek'' (king) of the Ja'alin tribe, who resided in Shendi, Sudan. After first having joined the Egyptian army during the Turkish rule in Sudan, he later defeated their troops and finally went into exile. Egyptian expedition During the Egyptian invasion of Sudan, Nimr was forced to accept the Egyptian-Turkish rule by submitting to Isma'il Kamil Pasha's army on 28 March 1821. He also joined Isma'il's campaign against the Sennar sultanate. After this campaign, Isma'il retired to Shendi, but paid the sixty year-old Mek Nimr no courtesy. When he demanded a tribute of slaves and money, Nimr refused. This led to a confrontation, in which Isma'il struck the king. Ayatollah Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr ( ar, نمر باقر النمر, Nimr Bāqir an-Nimr, Bakir al-Nimr, al-Nemr, al-Namr, al-Nimer, al-Nemer, al-Namer; 21 June 1959 – 2 January 2016), commonly referred to as Sheikh Nimr, was a Shia sheikh in al-Awamiyah in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province whose arrest and execution was widely condemned, including by governments and human rights organizations. He was popular among youth and critical of the Saudi Arabian government, calling for free elections in Saudi Arabia. He was arrested by Saudi authorities in 2006, at which time al-Nimr said he was beaten by the Mabahith. In 2009, he criticised Saudi authorities and suggested that if Saudi Shia rights were not respected, the Eastern Province should secede. Sonia Nimr (Arabic: سونيا نمر) (born 1955) is a Palestinian writer, storyteller, translator, ethnographer and academic. She writes for children and youth in Arabic and English, and relates folk-tales in colloquial Arabic. She is the winner of the 2014 Etisalat Award for Arabic Children's Literature for Best Young Adult Book for her book ''Extraordinary Journeys to Unknown Places''. Nimr is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at Birzeit University. Background Nimr was born in Jenin in 1955, where she finished her elementary and secondary studies.
