The Nigerian Army (NA) is the land force of the Nigerian Armed Forces. It is the largest component of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The President of Nigeria is the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Army, and its professional head is the Chief of Army Staff, who is the highest ranking military officer of the Nigerian Army. It is governed by the Nigerian Army Council (NAC). The Nigerian Army is operationally and geographically divided into ten divisions, the basic field formation. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi (born 1953) is a career diplomat who was appointed by President Obasanjo to serve as a technocrat minister.He held the position of Minister of State for Defence from January to May 2007 and later became Minister of Defence, making him the first Igbo person to hold this role in over 40 years.He is the son of former military leader Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, and was the ambassador to Togo before former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him to succeed Roland Oritsejafor as Minister of state for Defence. The chief of army staff (COAS) has been the title of the professional head of the Nigerian Army since 1966. Prior to 1966, the title was General Officer Commanding, Nigerian Army (GOCNA). Olufemi Oluyede
Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede (born 1968) is Nigerian Army officer who is the Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria. He was appointed on 30 September 2024 by President Bola Tinubu to temporarily fill the position during the indisposition of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. His appointment was later confirmed by the senate, and he officially took office on 9 December 2024.
