Nicholas Bacon (Lord Keeper)
Sir Nicholas Bacon (28 December 1510 – 20 February 1579) was Lord Keeper of the Great Seal during the first half of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. He was the father of the philosopher and statesman Sir Francis Bacon. Life He was born at Chislehurst, Kent, the second son of Robert Bacon (1479–1548) of Drinkstone, Suffolk, by his wife Eleanor (Isabel) Cage. He graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1527. The college law society at Corpus, the Nicholas Bacon Law Society, founded in 1972, is named after him. There is a story that he evaded ordination by going into hiding "with the help of a rich uncle", and he seems to have entered an Inn of Chancery before being admitted to Gray's Inn five years later after a period in Paris; he was called to the Bar in 1533. Sir Nicholas Bacon, 1st Baronet (–22 November 1624), of Redgrave, Suffolk, English Member of Parliament. In 1611 he became the first man to be made a baronet. Bacon would serve on many commissions. The Privy Council constantly called upon him to conduct inquiries. He was a puritan leader in Suffolk. The power and prestige of the puritan ministries in many areas of the country owed their power to Bacon. Sir Nicholas Bacon was considered a good Christian by his contemporaries. Especially his chaplain, Robert Allen. Robert Allen stated that Sir Bacon's wife was dedicated to "God's holy religion and worship by every good and Christian means in the sight of men." Sir Nicholas Bacon, 1st Baronet (1623–1666) was an English lawyer, and one of the Bacon baronets. On 18 June 1639, he was admitted to Gray's Inn. On 7 February 1662, he was created 1st Baronet Bacon, of Gillingham in Norfolk, England. His father, Nicholas Bacon of Gillingham, was the fifth son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, 1st Baronet, of Redgrave; his mother was Nicholas Bacon's second wife, Margaret D'Arcy. Sir Nicholas Hickman Ponsonby Bacon, 14th and 15th Baronet, (born 17 May 1953), is a British landowner, businessman and philanthropist. Sir Nicholas is also the Premier Baronet of England. Life and education Bacon is the only son of Sir Edmund Bacon, 13th and 14th Baronet, and Priscilla Dora Ponsonby, daughter of Colonel Sir Charles Ponsonby, 1st Baronet. Educated at Eton College before going up to Dundee University where he graduated as MA, Bacon was then called to the Bar at Gray's Inn. Between 1966 and 1969 he served as Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth II.
