Don Newcombe
Donald Newcombe (June 14, 1926 – February 19, 2019), nicknamed "Newk", was an American professional baseball pitcher in Negro league and Major League Baseball who played for the Newark Eagles (1944–45), Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1949–1951 and 1954–58), Cincinnati Reds (1958–1960), and Cleveland Indians (1960). Newcombe was the first pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Cy Young Awards during his career. This distinction would not be achieved again until 2011, when Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who was Rookie of the Year in 2006, won the Cy Young and MVP awards. In 1949, he became the first black pitcher to start a World Series game. In 1951, Newcombe was the first black pitcher to win 20 games in one season. In 1956, the inaugural year of the Cy Young Award, he became the first pitcher to win the National League MVP and the Cy Young in the same season. Sonny Rollins
Walter Theodore "Sonny" Rollins (born September 7, 1930) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist who is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians. In a seven-decade career, he has recorded over sixty albums as a leader. A number of his compositions, including " St. Thomas", " Oleo", " Doxy", "Pent-Up House", and " Airegin", have become jazz standards. Rollins has been called "the greatest living improviser" and the "Saxophone Colossus". Early life Rollins was born in New York City to parents from the United States Virgin Islands. The youngest of three siblings, he grew up in central Harlem and on Sugar Hill, receiving his first alto saxophone at the age of seven or eight. He attended Edward W. Newk's Eatery is an American chain of fast casual cafés which operates over 100 restaurants in 13 states. Corporate history Newk's Eatery was founded in 2004 as Newk's Express Café by father and son chefs, Don and Chris Newcomb, with the first store opening in Oxford, Mississippi. Newcomb and Newcomb had previously created and sold the restaurant chain McAlister's Deli. In 2013, the company rebranded itself as Newk's Eatery. In addition to the updated name, the company introduced a fresh design to its logo. The business was bought by private equity firm Sentinel Capital Partners in 2014 for an undisclosed amount, identifying the chain's opportunity for growth as a driving factor in the decision to acquire the company. Sentinel, which specializes in buying and building companies, implemented a plan for rapid growth. Newark Newks
The Newark Newks was the predominant name of a minor league baseball team based in Newark, Ohio from 1905 until 1915. The team was first known as the Newark Idlewilds and began playing in the Ohio–Pennsylvania League. In 1906 the club changed its name to the Newark Cotton Tops. Finally in 1907, the team took on the Newks name. In 1908 the team moved in the Ohio State League, where they played until 1911. On June 22, 1911, the team moved to Piqua, Ohio to become the Piqua Picks. However that June, the Grand Rapids Furniture Makers of the Central League moved to Newark and became the Newark Skeeters. The next season the Skeeters played in the Ohio State League and posted a 72–68 record before vanishing. The city fielded the Newark New Socks (sometimes referred to as the Newsocks) in the 1915 Buckeye League.
