The New Zealand men's national 3x3 team is the 3x3 basketball team representing New Zealand in international men's competitions. FIBA 3x3 World Cup
The FIBA 3x3 World Cup is a 3x3 (basketball), 3x3 basketball tournament for national teams organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The debut of the tournament originally named as the FIBA 3x3 World Championship was held in August 2012 in Athens, Greece. The current champions are Serbia men's national 3x3 team, Serbia in the men's division and United States women's national 3x3 team, United States in the women's division. There are two events in the tournament: one for men and another for women. In the first edition, there was a mixed event where each team was composed of 2 men and 2 women. The sport of basketball was first played in New Zealand in 1908. History Beginnings (1908) While basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1891, it did not reach New Zealand until the early 1900s. A former Naismith student, J. H. Greenwood, introduced basketball to New Zealand when he was appointed physical director of the Wellington branch of the YMCA in 1908. The sport was called indoor basketball to avoid confusion with the English offshoot of basketball played by females outdoors. New Zealand women's basketball was renamed netball in 1970. The YMCA spread the game from the 1920s, often with the help of United States, American Mormon missionaries. The 2023 FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup was the sixth edition of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup. There were 80 games that were played in 2023, with half in the qualification draw and the other half in the main draw. The men and women's champions won a spot at one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
