New Rochelle (; older french: La Nouvelle-Rochelle) is a city in Westchester County, New York, United States, in the southeastern portion of the state. In 2020, the city had a population of 79,726, making it the seventh-largest in the state of New York. Some residents refer to the city as '' New Ro'' or ''New Roc City''. History Etymology and early history The European settlement was started by refugee Huguenots (French Protestants) in 1688, who were fleeing religious persecution in France (such as ''Dragonnades'') after the king's revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Many of the settlers were artisans and craftsmen from the city of La Rochelle, France, thus influencing the choice of the name of "New Rochelle". 17th and 18th centuries Some 33 families established the community of ''La Nouvelle-Rochelle'' () in 1688. New Rochelle Station
New Rochelle station is a Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak train station located in New Rochelle, New York. The station serves Metro-North's New Haven Line and Amtrak's ''Northeast Regional''; Bee-Line Bus System buses serve a bus stop just outside the station. As of August 2006, weekday commuter ridership was 4,020, and there are 1,381 parking spots. It is the busiest New Haven Line station in Westchester County. On October 14, 2009, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The NRHP listing is limited to the historic station building and just the land underneath its roofline, as the pedestrian bridge elevators, track and other associated structure is all much newer and lack historical merit. New Rochelle Mall
New Rochelle Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located in the downtown business district of the suburban city of New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York. Construction began somewhere and sometime between the 1940s and 1960s, with the mall opening in 1968, but had closed in 1992 with the entire site demolished in 1998. The mall complex covered four large downtown blocks and was composed of 100 retail shops covering , a three-level, department store, and a 1,900-car garage. It also included a 1204-seat Century Mall Theater as well as being linked to an adjacent eight-story office building and hotel tower, both of which still remain. Plans were in the works for the mall to undergo a $30 million, 50 percent expansion, with the addition of a 12-story building that was to include a 12-screen movie theater and eight floors of offices. College Of New Rochelle
The College of New Rochelle (CNR) was a private Catholic college with its main campus in New Rochelle, New York, but also in Australia, England, and Germany. It was founded as the College of St. Angela by Mother Irene Gill, OSU of the Ursuline Order as the first Catholic women's college in New York in 1904. The name was changed to the College of New Rochelle in 1910. The college was composed of four schools and became co-educational in 2016. In early 2019, Mercy College and College of New Rochelle announced that College of New Rochelle would be absorbed into Mercy College before fall 2019, including College of New Rochelle's students, faculty, programs, and some facilities, as well as transcripts, history, and legacy of CNR alumni. New Rochelle High School (NRHS) is a public high school in New Rochelle, New York. It is part of the City School District of New Rochelle and is the city's sole public high school. Its student body represents 60 countries from around the world. It is a two-time Blue Ribbon School and is accredited by the Middle States Association Commission on Secondary Schools. 96% of graduates attend college or other institutions of higher learning and students earn accolades in competitive national programs including the National Merit Scholarship and the Regeneron Science Talent Search. The New Rochelle Walk of Fame was installed in 2011 in Ruby Dee Park at Library Green, located in the downtown area of New Rochelle in Westchester County, New York. The "walk" is a tribute to some of New Rochelle's most notable residents from throughout its 325-year history. New Rochelle Handicap
The New Rochelle Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race first run at a distance of seven furlongs on dirt in 1899 at Morris Park Racecourse in The Bronx. When that racetrack closed in 1904 the race was transferred to Belmont Park in Elmont, New York where it remained through 1910 until further restrictions were added to the Hart–Agnew Law by the New York Legislature that ended all racing in New York State. Although racing returned in 1913, the New Rochelle Handicap was not run again until 1918 when the Empire Racing Association revived it at its Empire City Race Track in Yonkers, New York. The 1923 race was transferred to Belmont Park. In 1943, the race was moved to the Empire Racing Association's Jamaica Race Course in Jamaica, New York which closed on August 2, 1959. In its final decade, the New Rochelle Handicap was contested at a distance of six furlongs.
