The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK or DP; , ) is a liberal political party in South Korea. The DPK and its rival, the People Power Party (PPP), form the two major political parties of South Korea. It is the ruling party following the victory of Lee Jae-myung at the 2025 presidential election, and has been the largest party in the National Assembly since 2016, controlling a majority since 2020. It was previously the ruling party under Moon Jae-in from 2017 to 2022. The Democratic Party was founded as the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD; ) on 26 March 2014 as a merger between the previous Democratic Party and the preparatory committee of the New Political Vision Party (NPVP) led by Ahn Cheol-soo. 2024 South Korean Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in South Korea on 10 April 2024. All 300 members of the National Assembly (South Korea), National Assembly were elected, 254 from first-past-the-post South Korean Legislature Constituencies, constituencies and 46 from party-list proportional representation, proportional party lists. Democratic Party (South Korea, 2013)
The Democratic Party (DP; ), formerly the Democratic United Party (DUP; ) until 2013, was a liberal political party in South Korea, and for the duration of its existence the country's main opposition force. On 15 December 2011, the Democratic Party, which had been the main opposition in the 18th Assembly, merged with the minor Citizens Unity Party to form the DUP. The Democratic United Party had strong connections with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions. The forming of the party took place against the background of the forthcoming April 2012 legislative election, in which the centre-left opposition sought to defeat the ruling Saenuri Party. Moon Jae-in
Moon Jae-in (, ; born January 24, 1953) is a South Korean politician and former lawyer who served as the 12th president of South Korea from 2017 to 2022. Before his presidency, he served as the senior secretary for civil affairs and the Chief of Staff to the President (South Korea), chief of staff to President Roh Moo-hyun, a List of members of the National Assembly (South Korea), 2012–2016, member of the National Assembly, and the leader of the Democratic Party (South Korea, 2015), Democratic Party of Korea. Born to North Korean refugees, Moon was raised in poverty in Busan. He excelled in school and studied law at Kyung Hee University. Lee Jae-myung
Lee Jae-myung (; born ) is a South Korean politician and lawyer who has served as the 14th president of South Korea since 2025. Lee previously held office as the governor of Gyeonggi Province from 2018 to 2021, as the leader of the Democratic Party from 2022 to 2025, and as the member of the National Assembly for Gyeyang B from 2022 to 2025. Born to a poor family in Andong, Lee became a factory worker after primary school and became disabled due to workplace injuries. He earned middle and high school equivalency diplomas and studied at Chung-Ang University, earning his law degree in 1986.
