The New Jersey sound or Jersey sound is a genre of house music originating in Newark, New Jersey, during the early 1980s. It is a type of deep and garage house with an emphasis on soulful vocals influenced by Newark's gospel legacy. History The New Jersey sound originated in the 1980s. Places like Club Zanzibar in Newark, New Jersey, where DJ Tony Humphries began his residency in 1982, helped "spawn the sometimes raw but always soulful, gospel-infused subgenre" of deep house music known as the Jersey sound. Larry Levan
Lawrence Philpot (July 20, 1954 – November 8, 1992), known as Larry Levan ( ), was an American DJ best known for his decade-long residency at the New York City night club Paradise Garage, which has been described as the prototype of the modern dance club. He developed a cult following who referred to his sets as "Saturday Mass". Influential post-disco DJ François Kevorkian credits Levan with introducing the dub aesthetic into dance music. Along with Kevorkian, Levan experimented with drum machines and synthesizers in his productions and live sets, ushering in an electronic, post-disco sound that presaged the ascendence of house music. Roselle ( ) is a borough located in Union County in the U.S. state of New Jersey. "Got a Love for You" is a song recorded by American vocal trio Jomanda for their debut studio album, ''Someone to Love Me'' (1990). Jomanda was an American female house music vocal trio from New Jersey. Members included Joanne Thomas, Cheri Williams, and Renee Washington. Biography Jomanda had several hits on the US ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Club Play chart during the first half of the 1990s, including "Got a Love for You," which reached #1 in 1991. The song also crossed over to the mainstream, going top 40 (peaking at #40) on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Kerri Chandler
Kerri Camar Chandler (born September 28, 1969) is an American DJ and record producer. He has been dubbed a pioneer within house music, a genre in which he has an "eclectic brand". Biography Chandler's influences go back to New Jersey, growing up in a family of jazz musicians. His father, Joseph Chandler, was a DJ and provided him with a background in the origins of soul, disco, as well as the New York Underground Sound. Accompanying his father to gigs, he began playing records at the Rally Racquet Club in East Orange, New Jersey at the age of 13. At 14, he began interning in studios and producing music. The Ballroom scene (also known as the Ballroom community, Ballroom culture, or just Ballroom) is an African-American and Latino underground LGBTQ+ subculture. Aly-Us is a house music group from New Jersey that was active mostly in the early 1990s. Their most famous record was “Follow Me” from 1992. Members and history Aly-Us originally started as trio composed of vocalist “Supa” aka Eddie L. Lewis, DJ Kyle “Small” Smith, and vocalist William Brian Jennings, and was active until 1996. Lewis revived the name Aly-Us on its own in the early 2010s.
