Nevers ( , ; , later ''Nevirnum'' and ''Nebirnum'') is a city and the Prefectures in France, prefecture of the Nièvre Departments of France, department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regions of France, region in central France. It was the principal city of the former provinces of France, province of Nivernais. It is south-southeast of Paris. History Nevers first enters written history as Noviodunum, a town held by the Aedui at Ancient Rome, Roman contact. The quantities of medals and other Roman antiquities found on the site indicate the importance of the place, and in 52 BCE, Julius Caesar made Noviodunum, which he describes as in a convenient position on the banks of the Loire, a depot (''B. G.'' vii. 55). The counts of Nevers were the rulers of the County of Nevers, in France, The territory became a duchy in the peerage of France in 1539 under the dukes of Nevers. History The history of the County of Nevers is closely connected to the Duchy of Burgundy. The counts also held the County of Auxerre in the 11th and 12th centuries, and the county was held by the count of Flanders and then the duke of Burgundy again in the 14th century. In 1539, it became a duchy in the peerage of France. For a time, it was held by a cadet branch of the House of Gonzaga. This branch inherited the Duchy of Mantua from the senior Gonzaga line (when it became extinct in 1627) and ruled Mantua until 1708, when the branch died out in the male line. Football Club Nevers 58, also known simply as Nevers, is an association football club based in the town of Nevers, France. The club was founded in 1948 and their home stadium is the Stade des Senets, with a capacity of 1,500. As of the 2010–11 season, Nevers play in the Division d'Honneur de Bourgogne, the sixth tier of French football. History Nevers Football knew its heyday in the 1970s. Union Sportive Olympique Nivernaise is a French rugby union club from Nevers, currently playing in the second level of the country's professional rugby system, Pro D2. History The team origins dates back to 1 August 1903, when Gustave Bossut created the PAG (Peloton d’avant-garde). This quickly became USN (Union sportive nivernaise) and then USON (Union sportive olympique nivernaise) in 1956. The name was changed to USON Nevers Rugby in 2016 to mark a new step in the club's history. After finishing 3rd at the end of the 2016–17 Fédérale 1 season, they won promotion to the second tier of French rugby after coming back to beat SO Chambéry in the second round of their promotion play-offs. Nevers Mumba (born 1960 in Chitambo at Chitambo Mission, Zambia) is a Zambian politician and religious minister. He is the current leader of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy. He served as the eighth vice-president of Zambia in 2003–04 under Levy Mwanawasa. Early life and career Mumba grew up with his parents and 11 brothers and sisters in Chinsali, in a religious home. Ernest Alonzo Nevers (June 11, 1902 – May 3, 1976), nicknamed "Big Dog", was an American professional football and baseball player and football coach. Widely regarded as one of the best football players in the first half of the 20th century, he played as a fullback and was a triple-threat man known for his talents in running, passing, and kicking.
