The Ness-class combat stores ship were a class of three combat stores ships built by Swan Hunter for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), the naval auxiliary fleet of the United Kingdom, in the mid-1960s. They were purchased by the United States Navy (USN) in the mid-1980s and renamed Sirius class. They were operated by Military Sealift Command for the USN until the late 2000s when they were deactivated. Spica is the brightest object in the constellation of Virgo and one of the 20 brightest stars in the night sky. It has the Bayer designation α Virginis, which is Latinised to Alpha Virginis and abbreviated Alpha Vir or α Vir. Analysis of its parallax shows that it is located 250 light-years from the Sun. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) is a naval auxiliary fleet owned by the UK's Ministry of Defence. It is a component of His Majesty's Naval Service and provides logistical and operational support to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
