Nereis Vexillosa
''Nereis vexillosa'', the mussel worm, belongs to the phylum Annelida, a group known as the segmented worms. It is generally iridescent green and can reach 30 cm in length. It can be distinguished by the size of the upper ligules on the notopodia of the posterior region of the body. The upper ligules are much larger than the lower ligules. It is also without a collar-like structure around the peristomium. Habitat Sand or rocks in intertidal and shallow marine waters. Range Pacific Ocean from eastern Siberia to western North America as far south as Santa Barbara, California. Also found in Southern Africa. Behavior ''Nereis vexillosa'' is often found in burrows in the sand or in association with mussels and barnacles. Although it has an eversible proboscis that it uses for prey capture, ''N. vexillosa'' also feeds on algae which it attaches to the opening of its burrow. Adolph Eduard Grube (18 May 1812, in Königsberg – 23 June 1880, in Wrocław, Breslau) was a German zoologist. He served as a professor at the University of Tartu, University of Dorpat before moving to University of Wrocław, Wrocław. Life and work Grube was born in Königsberg (Królewiec) to lawyer Karl Eduard (1783–1833) and Ernestine Luise née Mertens (1788–1857) and went to the Collegium Fridericianum before entering university. He was attracted to natural history thanks to a teacher named Bulack. At university he attended the comparative anatomy lectures of Karl Ernst von Baer and Karl Friedrich Burdach. The peristomium is the first true body segment in an annelid worm's body in the anterior end. It is directly behind the prostomium and contains the mouth, tentacular cirri, and sometimes feeding palps, which may instead occur on the prostomium. Epitoky is a process that occurs in many species of polychaete marine worms wherein a sexually immature worm (the atoke) is modified or transformed into a sexually mature worm (the epitoke). Epitokes are pelagic morphs capable of sexual reproduction. Unlike the immature form, which is typically benthic (lives on the bottom), epitokes are specialized for swimming as well as reproducing. The primary benefit to epitoky is increased chances of finding other members of the same species for reproduction. There are two methods in which epitoky can occur: schizogamy and epigamy. Phyllodocida is an order of polychaete worms in the subclass Aciculata. These worms are mostly marine, though some are found in brackish water.
