Neobatrachia
The Neobatrachia (Neo-Latin ''neo-'' ("new") + ''batrachia'' ("frogs")) are a suborder of the Frog, Anura, the order (biology), order of frogs and toads. This suborder is the most advanced and apomorphic of the three anuran suborders alive today, hence its name, which literally means "new frogs" (from the hellenic languages, hellenic words ''neo'', meaning "new" and ''batrachia'', meaning "frogs"). It is also by far the largest of the three; its more than 5,000 different species make up over 96% of all living anurans. The differentiation between Archaeobatrachia, Mesobatrachia, and Neobatrachia is based primarily on anatomic differences, especially the skeletal structure, as well as several visible characteristics and behaviors. Heleophrynoidea
Heleophrynidae is a family (biology), family of frogs, commonly known as ghost frogs. They are thought to be the most Basal (phylogenetics), basal group in the Neobatrachia. The family consists of two Genus, genera, ''Heleophryne'' and ''Natal ghost frog, Hadromophryne'', with seven species. Ghost frogs live in swift-moving mountain streams in South Africa. The common name of "ghost frogs" may have been coined because of their occurrence in Skeleton Gorge. Taxonomy The ghost frogs were formerly thought to be closely related to the Sooglossidae of the Seychelles (which are now thought to be a sister group to Ranoidea), or to the Australian Myobatrachidae, which are now thought to be a sister group to Hyloidea. In contrast, more recent taxonomic studies place them as being the most basal extant members of the Neobatrachia and having no close relatives, having diverged from the rest of the Neobatrachia during the Early Cretaceous, about 140 million years ago. Sooglossoidea
Sooglossoidea is a superfamily of frogs. It contains only two highly divergent families consisting of three genera with two species each, one family being found in southwestern India and the other in the Seychelles. Taxonomy The Sooglossoidea are an ancient division of the Neobatrachia; phylogenetic evidence indicates that they diverged from the rest of the Neobatrachia during the Early Cretaceous, about 125 million years ago, after colonizing Insular India from Africa. One family, the Nasikabatrachidae, remained in India; the other, Sooglossidae, was isolated on the Seychelles Microcontinent (which later turned into an island chain) after it split from India. Both families are thought to have diverged around the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. Cretadhefdaa
''Cretadhefdaa'' is an extinct genus of frog from the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) Kem Kem Group of Morocco. It contains only the species ''C. taouzensis'' from the middle Cenomanian Douira Formation, known from some vertebrae and cranial elements. The genus name is a combination of Cretaceous and ''dhefdaa'', the Arabic word for "frog", while the species name references the city of Taouz, near which it was discovered. ''Cretadhefdaa'' is a member of the modern frog group Neobatrachia, making it the oldest known neobatrachian outside of South America, and the second neobatrachian known from the Mesozoic of Africa along with the much later '' Beelzebufo''. Frog
A frog is any member of a diverse and largely semiaquatic group of short-bodied, tailless amphibian vertebrates composing the order (biology), order Anura (coming from the Ancient Greek , literally 'without tail'). Australobatrachia
Australobatrachia ("southern frogs") is a clade of Frog, frogs in the suborder Neobatrachia. It comprises three Family (biology), families of frogs with a Gondwana, Gondwanan distribution, being known from Chile, Australia, and New Guinea. Together, they form the sister group to the superfamily Hyloidea. Taxonomy The common ancestor of all three families inhabited South America during the Early Cretaceous (about 125 million years ago). By about 100 million years ago, the ancestors of the Calyptocephalellidae diverged from the Myobatrachoidea, as the ancestral Myobatrachoidea moved south, colonizing the Australian continent via the Antarctic land bridge. Calyptocephalellidae
The Calyptocephalellidae are a family of toads (although not true members of the Bufonidae) found in Chile containing two living genera, '' Calyptocephalella'' and '' Telmatobufo.'' The genus ''Calyptocephalella'' contains one living species, the helmeted water toad (''C. gayi''), which is very large and mostly aquatic. The genus ''Telmatobufo'' contains four species, '' T. australis'', '' T. bullocki'', '' T. ignotus'', and '' T. venustus''. All five living species within the family are considered threatened, with ''T. bullocki'' and ''T. venustus'' being classified as critically endangered. The family has been present in southern South America since the Late Cretaceous and were present in the Antarctic Peninsula during the Eocene. Mesobatrachia
The Mesobatrachia (Ancient Greek ''μέσος'' (mésos, "middle") + ''batrachia'' ("frogs")) is a paraphyletic group of relatively primitive frogs. At the end of 2016, it contained 3 superfamilies (Pelobatoidea, Pelobatoidea#Pelodytoidea, Pelodytoidea and Pipoidea), 6 families, 16 genera, and 244 species. Recognized as a group in 1993, the name is contrasted with the primitive Archaeobatrachia and the more diverse and advanced Neobatrachia. The Mesobatrachia comprise five fossorial families, including the spadefoot toads of Europe, North America, and East Asia, the parsley frogs, and the Mexican burrowing toad, as well as one obligatorily aquatic family, the Pipidae of Africa and South America. Ranoidea
The Ranoidea are a Taxonomic rank, superfamily of frogs in the order Anura. Members of this superfamily are characterised by having the pectoral girdle fused into a single complex unit, having no ribs, and using an axillary grip during amplexus. The larvae have a single Spiracle (vertebrates), spiracle on the left side and complex mouthparts, or in some species, undergo direct development. The taxonomy of these families has been under heavy debate for many years. Limnodynastidae
Limnodynastidae, commonly known as the Australian ground frogs, is a family (biology), family of frogs found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Aru Islands Regency, Aru Islands. They were formerly considered a subfamily of the Myobatrachidae, the other large radiation of terrestrial frogs in Australia, but are now considered a distinct family. Myobatrachoidea is a superfamily of frogs. It contains two families, both of which are found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Aru Islands. Some sources group these two families into a single family Myobatrachidae. Their closest relatives are thought to be the Calyptocephalellidae of southern South America, from which they diverged during the mid-Cretaceous (about 100 million years ago). Hyloidea
Hyloidea is a superfamily of frogs.R.Alexander Pyron, John J.Wiens, 2011, ''A large-scale phylogeny of Amphibia including over 2800 species, and a revised classification of extant frogs, salamanders, and caecilians'' Hyloidea accounts for 54% of all living anuran species. The superfamily Hyloidea branched off from its closest relative, the Australobatrachia, during the mid-Cretaceous. The fossil evidence found during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event could not determine the effects upon the frogs, due to the lack of fossils.
