Nemmers Prize In Medical Science
The Mechthild Esser Nemmers Prize in Medical Science, established in 2016, is awarded every other year by the Feinberg School of Medicine. The recipient is "a physician-scientist whose body of research exhibits outstanding achievement in their discipline as demonstrated by works of lasting significance". The winner is determined by a jury of biomedical scientists and receives $350,000. The award is one of five Nemmers Prizes awarded by the University, created as a gift to Northwestern by the late brothers Erwin Esser Nemmers and Frederic Esser Nemmers. Feinberg School Of Medicine
The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, formerly Northwestern Medical School from 1906 to 2002, is the medical school of Northwestern University and is located in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1859, Feinberg offers a full-time Doctor of Medicine degree program, multiple dual degree programs, graduate medical education, and continuing medical education. Huda Zoghbi
Huda Yahya Zoghbi (Arabic: هدى الهبري الزغبي ''Hudā al-Hibrī az-Zughbī''; born Huda El-Hibri; 20 June 1954) is a Lebanese-born American geneticist, and a professor at the Departments of Molecular and Human Genetics, Neuroscience and Neurology at the Baylor College of Medicine. She is the director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. She was the editor of the ''Annual Review of Neuroscience'' from 2018-2024. Her work helped elucidate the genes and genetic mechanisms responsible for a number of devastating neurological disorders, such as Rett syndrome and spinocerebellar ataxia type 1. Zoghbi's discoveries have provided new ways of thinking about other neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, autism and intellectual disability, which could lead to new therapeutics and better, more efficient treatments. Stuart Orkin
Stuart Holland Orkin is an American physician, stem cell biologist and researcher in pediatric hematology-oncology. He is the David G. Nathan Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Orkin's research has focused on the genetic basis of blood disorders. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Early life Orkin grew up in Manhattan, where his father was a urologist. He studied biology as an undergraduate (B.S., 1967) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1972. He did postdoctoral research in molecular biology at the National Institutes of Health under geneticist Philip Leder. Jeremy Nathans
Jeremy Nathans (born July 31, 1958) is a professor of molecular biology and genetics at Johns Hopkins University. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is known for first isolating and characterizing the opsin genes contributing to human color vision. In 2020 he was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal (Franklin Institute) in Life Science.
