National conventions for writing telephone numbers vary by country. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) publishes a recommendation entitled ''Notation for national and international telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and Web addresses.'' Recommendation E.123 specifies the format of telephone numbers assigned to telephones and similar communication endpoints in national telephone numbering plans. In examples, a numeric digit is used only if the digit is the same in every number, and letters to illustrate groups. X is used as a wildcard character to represent any digit in lists of numbers. Telephone numbers in the Netherlands are administered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation of the Netherlands. ComReg
The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) () is the general communications regulator for Ireland, covering almost all possible types of communications. Founded on 1 December 2002, ComReg took over from the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation (ODTR), amongst other bodies. The ODTR was established in 1997 to take over the licensing and regulatory functions of the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communication which related primarily to broadcasting and communications. The agency has a mandate to telecommunications in Germany and other infrastructure systems. Overview Germany has an open telephone numbering plan. Denmark generally uses an eight-digit closed telephone numbering plan. Subscriber trunk dialling (STD), also known as subscriber toll dialing, is a telephone numbering plan feature and telecommunications technology in the United Kingdom and various Commonwealth countries for the dialling of trunk calls by telephone subscribers without the assistance of switchboard operators.
