National Prize For Applied Sciences And Technologies (Chile)
The National Prize for Applied and Technological Sciences ( es, Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnológicas) was created in 1992 as one of the replacements for the National Prize for Sciences under Law 19169. The other two prizes in this same area are for Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences. It is part of the National Prize of Chile. Jury The jury is made up of the Minister of Education, who calls it, two academics assigned by the Council of Rectors, the President of the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT), and the last recipient of the prize. Pablo Valenzuela (; born June 13, 1941) is a Chilean biochemist dedicated to biotechnology development. He is known for his genetic studies of hepatitis viruses; participated as R&D Director in the discovery of hepatitis C virus and the invention of the world's first recombinant vaccine (against hepatitis B virus). He is one of the cofounders of the biotechnology company Chiron Corporation and of Fundacion Ciencia para la Vida, a private non profit institution where he is currently working. José Rodríguez Pérez is a Chilean engineer and professor of electrical engineering at the Universidad Andrés Bello. Early life and education Rodríguez was born in Valdivia, Chile. He received the degrees of Technician in Electronics and Electrical Engineer at the Federico Santa María Technical University (USM) in 1977 and his doctorate in electrical engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1985. Professor Juan A. Asenjo (born October 7, 1949) is a Chilean chemical engineer who specialises in biotechnology. He currently serves as the director of the Centre for Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Chile and is the President of the Chilean Academy of Science.
