National Geographic Adventure (magazine)
''National Geographic Adventure'' was a magazine started in 1999 by the National Geographic Society in the United States. The first issue was published in Spring 1999. Regular publication of the magazine ended in December 2009, and the name was reused for a biannual newsstand publication. The last issue was December 2009/January 2010. Features The magazine covered adventure travel, environmental issues, natural science, and other topics related to the outdoors. Geoff Tabin
Geoffrey Craig Tabin (born 1956) is the Fairweather Foundation Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and the co-founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project along with Dr. Sanduk Ruit. Education Dr. Tabin graduated from Yale College where he was a two-time captain of the Yale Varsity tennis team. After Yale he earned a M.A. in philosophy at Oxford as a Marshall Scholar. Dr. Tabin received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School before completing his ophthalmology residency at Brown University and a fellowship in corneal diseases and surgery at Melbourne University in Australia. Adventuring Dr. Tabin is an avid mountaineer who has made many first ascents, including being part of the first ascent of the Kangshung Face of Mount Everest in 1983, and in 1990 he became the fourth person to reach the top of the Seven Summits. 2008 K2 Disaster
The 2008 K2 disaster occurred on 1 August 2008, when 11 mountaineers from international expeditions died on K2, the second- highest mountain on Earth. Three others were seriously injured. The series of deaths, over the course of the Friday ascent and Saturday descent, was the worst single accident in the history of K2 mountaineering. Some of the specific details remain uncertain, with different plausible scenarios having been given about different climbers' timing and actions, and different versions reported later via survivors' eyewitness accounts or via radio communications of climbers who died (sometimes minutes) later in the course of events on K2 that day. The main problem was reported to be an ice avalanche which occurred at an area known as "the Bottleneck". This destroyed many of the climbers' rope lines leaving them unable to descend.
