The National Archives of Spain is a national system of Archives and State Centers maintained by the Archive (''Archivo'') department of the Ministry of Culture (Spain), Spanish Ministry of Culture. Collections The National Archives of Spain consists of a number of different collections. The four main branches of the National Archives of Spain include the General Archive of the Indies in Seville, the Archivo Histórico Nacional, National Historical Archives in Madrid and elsewhere, the General Administrative Archives in Alcala de Henares, and the General Archive of Simancas. The General Administrative Archives, Alcala de Henares, is a repository for the records of the ministries of the central administration, created in 1969 as a replacement for the Central Archive, which was destroyed in a fire in 1939. General Archive Of The Indies
The ''Archivo General de Indias'' (; standard abbreviation AGI; ), often simply called the Archive of the Indies, was created by Carlos III of Spain, Carlos III and inaugurated in 1785. It is housed in the former Consulado de mercaderes, merchant guild building in Seville, Spain, built in the late 16th century. It became the repository of archival materials documenting the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and Asia. The building was designed by Juan de Herrera; it is an Italianate example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. This structure and its contents were registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, together with the adjoining Seville Cathedral and the Alcázar of Seville. It was founded in the nineteenth century when it shared a building with the Real Academía de la Historia. The General Archive of Simancas (, also known by its acronym, ''AGS'') is an official archive located in the Castle of Simancas, in the town of Simancas, province of Valladolid, Castile and León, Spain. It was founded in 1540, making this the first official archive of the Crown of Castile. The chronological evolution of the institution has been influenced by the history of the Crown of Castile. The moments of strength or weakness of the Spanish monarchy have been reflected in the regularity of documents' arrivals or conversely in the shortages of resources. A major milestone occurred in 1588, when Philip II of Spain issued the charter of the Archives of Simancas, a key document for understanding the management of both this archive and others in the peninsula. The General Archive of the Crown of Aragon (Catalan: ''Arxiu General de la Corona d'Aragó''), originally Royal Archives of Barcelona (Catalan: ''Arxiu Reial de Barcelona''), is an archive containing the background documents of the institutions of the former Crown of Aragon and currently also contains other historical resources.
