Nat Levine
Nat Levine (July 26, 1899 – August 6, 1989), was an American film producer. He produced 105 films between 1921 and 1946. Born in New York City, he entered the film industry as an accountant for Metro Pictures and became personal secretary to Metro head Marcus Loew. He moved to Hollywood in 1925, setting out to produce his own movies. He had made many friends in film distribution, and arranged with them to release his films on the independent state's rights market. He called his company Mascot Pictures. Mascot Levine knew that theater managers, especially in smaller towns, liked movies that emphasized action. He filled that demand with western and dramatic serials. Levine was well aware that small-town exhibitors were slow to convert to the new talking-picture technology, so he concentrated on silent pictures until the end of the silent-film era. ''The Vanishing Legion'' is a 1931 American pre-Code Western film serial from Mascot, directed by Ford Beebe and B. Reeves Eason. Stars Harry Carey and Edwina Booth were originally intended to be in the studio's previous serial, '' King of the Wild'', but had to be re-cast when the MGM film '' Trader Horn'' (1931) overran its schedule. Both also starred in the Mascot serial ''The Last of the Mohicans'' and Carey was the lead in '' The Devil Horse''. Picfair Theater
The Picfair Theater was a neighborhood film house in the West Los Angeles neighborhood of Picfair, on West Pico Boulevard at Fairfax Avenue. It opened on January 24, 1941, and was leased and operated by Joseph Moritz and James H. Nicholson in the 1940s. It was part of a four-theater booking combination called the "Academy of Proven Hits," which showed reissued double-bill features, often Academy Award winners. Nicholson managed the theater before he launched his American Releasing Corporation, which later became American International Pictures. The theater was built by general contractor Joe DeBell, and had a soundproof "crying room", where mothers could take their noisy children and watch the movie without disturbing other patrons. The theater was remodeled in 1968 after the Loews chain purchased it and financed the upgrade valued at $100,000. Herbert Yates
Herbert John Yates (August 24, 1880 – February 3, 1966), a Hollywood mini-mogul, was the founder and President of Republic Pictures. With his contract, he had launched the film careers of such Western stars as Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and John Wayne. Mack Sennett (born Michael Sinnott; January 17, 1880 – November 5, 1960) was a Canadian-American producer, director, actor, and studio head who was known as the "King of Comedy" during his career. Born in Danville, Quebec, he started acting in films in the Biograph Company of New York City in 1908, and later opened Keystone Studios in Edendale, Los Angeles, Edendale, California in 1912. Thomas Edwin Mix (born Thomas Hezikiah Mix; January 6, 1880 – October 12, 1940) was an American film actor and the star of many early Western (genre), Western films between 1909 and 1935. Maurice Geraghty (September 29, 1908 – June 30, 1987) was an American screenwriter, film director and producer. Early life Geraghty was the son of Tom Geraghty. His brother Gerald was also a screenwriter; and his sister was silent film actress and painter Carmelita Geraghty. After writing a variety of serials and films for Republic Pictures, several of Geraghty's screenplays were used by major studios.
