Narrows
A narrows or narrow (used interchangeably but usually in the plural form), is a restricted land or water passage. Most commonly a narrows is a strait, though it can also be a water gap. A narrows may form where a stream passes through a tilted bed of hard rock lying between two softer beds: " the hard beds are vertical, so that their outcrop does not shift as erosion proceeds, a narrows is developed". Like a dam, this "raises the water level for a short distance upriver". A narrows is also typically a good location for trapping migrating fish. Furthermore, a narrows is "an important topographical feature for wind mixing",Howard J. Freeland, David M. Farmer, Colin D. Levings, ''Fjord Oceanography'' (1980), p. 216. an effect where a wind chill may form ice while the surrounding temperature remains above freezing. Narrows Plantation House
Narrows Plantation House is located in Lake Arthur, Louisiana. It was built in the 1830s and completely renovated during 1910–12. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Its NRHP nomination states that the building's significance rests in its fine Arts and Crafts interior, which stands out in southern Louisiana:In a very general sense the thousands upon thousands of bungalows in the region reflect the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement. But these houses are merely pale and diluted examples of the taste. High style, convincing examples of the movement are very rare. Most bungalows in southern Louisiana have plain interiors with perhaps a brick mantel or a few oak cabinets. Many have Mission or Colonial Revival interiors. By contrast, the interiors at the Narrows feature paneled wainscotting Panelling (or paneling in the United States) is a Millwork (building material), millwork wall covering constructed from rigid or semi-rigid components.
