NWA Southern Junior Heavyweight Championship
The NWA Southern Junior Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling championship (professional wrestling), title for lighter wrestlers, board-controlled by the National Wrestling Alliance since December 1949. It originally was used by various promotions across the Southeastern United States, most prevalently in NWA Mid-America based Tennessee. In August 1974, it was renamed the Memphis Wrestling Southern Heavyweight Championship, NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship ''(Memphis version)''. The title was revived by the NWA in December 1999, and is used in the NWA Mid-South professional wrestling promotion, promotion, based in Humboldt, Tennessee. NWA Mid-America
NWA Mid-America was a professional wrestling promotion territory under the umbrella of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) that promoted shows in Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama from 1940 until 1981. The company was founded in 1940 by Nick Gulas and Roy Welch and was one of the first promotions to join the NWA after it was founded in 1948. From 1953 until late 1974, John Cazana promoted the Knoxville, Tennessee, Knoxville area and Joe Gunther promoted the Birmingham, Alabama, Birmingham area from around 1940 until some point in the 1970s. In 1977, promoter Jerry Jarrett and wrestler Jerry Lawler broke away from NWA Mid-America, breaking the Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis area off to start on the own under the name the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA). Continental Wrestling Association
Continental Wrestling Association (later the Championship Wrestling Association) was a wrestling promotion managed by Jerry Jarrett. The CWA was the name of the "governing body" for the Championship Wrestling, Inc. promotion which was usually referred to as Mid-Southern Wrestling or the Memphis territory. This promotion was a chief NWA territory during the 1970s and early 1980s while operating out of Tennessee and Kentucky. The CWA was a member of the National Wrestling Alliance until 1986 and affiliated with the American Wrestling Association until 1989. In 1989, the CWA merged with the World Class Wrestling Association to form the United States Wrestling Association thus ceasing to exist as a separate entity. Ricky Gibson (wrestler)
Richard Earl Cain (November 19, 1952 – September 15, 2006) was an American professional wrestler who worked in the Southern Territories. He was the brother of Robert Gibson. Professional wrestling career Gibson made his wrestling debut in 1970 working in Alabama and worked with Lee Fields. In 1975, he did a tour for All Japan Pro Wrestling. Gibson trained his brother Robert who made his debut in 1977 and teamed together winning many tag team titles mainly in Continental Wrestling Association in Tennessee. In 1982, Gibson was in a car accident and spent 39 days in intensive care. In 1983, the brothers disbanded when Robert went on to form the Rock 'n' Roll Express with Ricky Morton. Gibson would work in the AWA, and Mid-South. In 1986, he wrestled as Ricky Lee Jones in the Mid-Atlantic. He lasted his match in 1987 against Ric Flair. Hiro Matsuda
(July 22, 1937 – November 27, 1999), best known by his ring name , was a Japanese professional wrestler and trainer. Professional wrestling career Kojima played an active role as an ace pitcher at baseball in Nittai Ebara High School Baseball Club in Japan, and after graduating, he joined Japan Pro Wrestling in 1957, but left in 1960. Matsuda then went to Peru, where he worked as Ernesto Kojima. Later, after moving to Mexico through the United States, the ring name was changed to Kojima Saito, Great Matsuda, and Hiro Matsuda. John Mortl Lanzo (October 14, 1935 – December 8, 2021) was an American professional wrestler, better known by his ring name, Blackjack Lanza. Along with his long-term tag team partner, Blackjack Mulligan, Lanza was one-half of The Blackjacks: "black cowboy hat-wearing, cowboy boot-stomping, rugged hombres who drew money wherever they went".
