NCHA Men's Tournament
The NCHA men's tournament is an annual Division III conference tournament that has taken place since 1986. The winner of the tournament has received an automatic bit to the NCAA Tournament since they were first offered in 2000. History When the NCHA formed in 1981 the NCAA was already holding a preliminary tournament to help determine the bids for the NCAA Tournament. They continued to do so until 1985 after which the western conferences began playing their own postseason tournaments. For the first year the NCHA tournament format was a Two-game, total goal series for both rounds. That was changed to a point system the following year; the teams would play two games against one another and whoever had the most points would advance (2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie). If the two teams were tied after two games than a 20-minute 'mini-game' was played to determine the winner. Northern Collegiate Hockey Association
The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) is a college athletic conference which operates in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in the midwestern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division III as a hockey-only conference. The conference was founded in 1980 as a loose association of six schools in Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The league was formalized the next year. In the summer of 2012, the five schools in the University of Wisconsin System announced that they would leave the conference to begin playing hockey in their all-sports conference, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The move would have left only two men's teams in the NCHA, leading St. Norbert and St. Scholastica to join the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA). The University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire Blugolds (casually known as the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds) are the athletic teams of the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. The 1998–99 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey season began in October 1998 and concluded on March 20 of the following year. This was the 26th season of Division III college ice hockey. Division II Findlay joined with 4 Division III schools to form the MCHA. After the season the Oilers jumped up to Division I but were allowed to immediately participate in postseason tournament because they officially remained a D-II program. 1997–98 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1997–98 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey season began in October 1997 and concluded on March 21 of the following year. This was the 25th season of Division III college ice hockey. Quinnipiac and Fairfield began the season as members of ECAC North/South/Central, however, because the teams were preparing to be founding members of the MAAC's ice hockey conference the following year they had begun to offer athletic scholarships. Conference rules strictly forbade any athletic scholarships and both schools (in December and February respectively) were ruled ineligible to play in the conference postseason. Additionally, all games played by Fairfield and Quinnipiac would not be counted in the conference standings. Sacred Heart was also excluded from ECAC tournament play for similar reasons. 1993–94 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1993–94 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey season began in October 1993 and concluded on March 19 of the following year. This was the 21st season of Division III college ice hockey. The Presidents of the NESCAC member schools held a vote in 1994 and changed their rules to allow all non-football teams to compete in national tournaments. Though the NESCAC did not sponsor ice hockey at the time, the nine ECAC East schools who were members of NESCAC were now permitted to accept bids to the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship. In part of the new rules, NESCAC members were only allowed to participate in one postseason tournament and, as a result, the teams that finished with leading records would tend to opt out of the conference tournament and hope to receive a bid to the national tournament. Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts college in Lake Forest, Illinois. Founded in 1857 as Lind University by a group of Presbyterian ministers, the college has been coeducational since 1876 and an undergraduate-focused liberal arts institution since 1903. 1992–93 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1992–93 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey season began in October 1992 and concluded on March 27 of the following year. This was the 20th season of Division III college ice hockey. The NCAA restarted the Division II Championship for this season and all programs from Division II schools were required to submit bids to the second-tier championship despite continuing to play in a majority Division III conference. Due to the low number and sometimes vast distance between the schools, no Division II conferences were formed, even from the few programs that became independent.
