NCAA Season 99 Basketball Tournaments
The NCAA Season 99 basketball tournaments are the basketball tournaments of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) for its 2023–24 season. The tournament is being hosted by José Rizal University. There are two tournaments, the men's tournament for male college students, and the juniors' tournament for male senior high school students. The San Beda Red Lions defeated the Mapúa Cardinals in the Finals. Both teams split the first two Finals games, then San Beda pulled away late in the fourth quarter of Game 3 to win their first title since 2018. The Cardinals had finished first in the elimination round; they then defeated the Benilde Blazers in the semifinals. Meanwhile, the Lyceum Pirates finished second, and lost to the Red Lions twice in the semifinals to be eliminated. Jose Luis "Louie" Gonzalez (sometimes misspelled as Louie Gonzales) is a former collegiate basketball player who currently serves as the head coach of the JRU Heavy Bombers. Coaching career Early career Gonzalez, a Letran alumnus, son of a former La Salle Greenhills Greenies Tanny Gonzalez, worked with Binky Favis in the late 1990s. He's a part of Letran championship run at 1999. After his stint at Letran, he coached at British School Manila and then became part of Glenn Capacio's coaching staff at FEU Tamaraws from 2007 to 2010. He joined Globalport Batang Pier, and reunited again with Capacio. When Pido Jarencio took over, Gonzalez left for Kia Sorento in 2014. The JRU Heavy Bombers basketball program represents José Rizal University (JRU) in men's basketball as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) (NCAA). The JRU Heavy Bombers are the varsity teams with the longest continuous membership in the NCAA, having been a member since 1927 without interruption, and have the longest championship drought.
