NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship
The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship is an annual men's college tennis national collegiate championship sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for teams in Division I. The tournament crowns a team, individual, and doubles champion. Held every year since 1883 (except 2020), the championship is typically contested in May, and–in recent years–has been held at the same location as the NCAA women's Division I tournaments. Originally known as the U.S. Intercollegiate Championships, the first championship was held in 1883, 23 years before the founding of the NCAA; Harvard's Joseph Clark won the inaugural singles title. The first NCAA-sponsored tennis tournament, however, would not be held until 1946. Tennis
Tennis is a List of racket sports, racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent (singles (tennis), singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles (tennis), doubles). Howard Taylor (tennis)
Howard Augustus Taylor (November 23, 1865 – November 26, 1920) was a tennis player from the United States. Biography Howard Taylor was born in New York City on November 23, 1865. He reached the Challenge Round at the U.S. National Championships in 1884 (beating Joseph Clark, Percy Knapp and William Thorne before losing to Richard Sears). Taylor reached the all comers final in 1886 (beating James Dwight and Clark before losing to Robert Livingston Beeckman). He reached the all comers final in 1887 (beating Oliver Campbell before losing to Henry Slocum). Slocum beat him in the all comers final again in 1888. Taylor also won the doubles title in 1889 alongside Slocum, finishing runner-up in 1886 and 1887.
