The ''NBA on Mutual'' is the de facto name for National Basketball Association radio broadcasts on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Mutual was the official national radio broadcaster of NBA games (including the All-Star Game and NBA Finals) from the 1968-69 through 1983-84 seasons. Mutual had previously broadcast NBA games as far back as 1954-55. Mutual was ultimately supplanted by the ABC Radio Network. Bob Blackburn (announcer)
Bob Blackburn (October 14, 1924 – January 8, 2010) was the original play-by-play voice of the Seattle SuperSonics of the National Basketball Association. He called games for the team on KOMO radio and KOMO-TV, and later on KJR radio. His tenure with the SuperSonics included the team's first season in 1967-68 and its NBA Championship run in 1979, when the SuperSonics beat the Washington Bullets four games to one in a best-of-seven series. Early years Blackburn grew up in the Los Angeles area. As a child, he was bedridden with tuberculosis. While listening to college sports broadcasts, he dreamed of being behind the microphone. Blackburn's uncle had told him his strength was in his "loud voice," so a career in broadcasting seemed like a good idea. Blackburn managed to land a job at a radio station in Santa Ana, California in 1942, and worked his way up. He also attended college at Fresno State Normal School. Oscar Palmer Robertson (born November 24, 1938), nicknamed "the Big O", is an American former professional basketball player who played for the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Robertson played point guard and was a 12-time All-Star, 11-time member of the All-NBA Team, and one-time winner of the MVP award in 14 seasons. John Michael Orr (June 10, 1927 – December 30, 2013) was an American basketball player and coach, best known as the head coach of men's basketball at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Michigan, and at Iowa State University. In the 1975–76 season, Orr was named National Coach of the Year. Early life and playing career Orr was born in Taylorville, Illinois or Yale, Kansas and grew up in Taylorville during the Great Depression. Orr attended Taylorville High School under coach Dolph Stanley and in his senior year (1944) led the ''Tornadoes'' to a state championship and a 45–0 record, the first team to ever finish a season undefeated in the Illinois High School Association's history. Andrew J. Musser Jr. (December 28, 1937 – January 22, 2012) was an American sportscaster. He is best known for his time as a play-by-play announcer for Philadelphia Phillies baseball from 1976 to 2001. Early life and education Born in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania he grew up in nearby Harrisburg. He received a Bachelor of Arts in communications from Syracuse University in 1959. Career Musser, Richie Ashburn, and Harry Kalas were a team which broadcast Phillies games on both radio and television for 21 consecutive seasons from 1976 to 1997. He retired after the 2001 season.
