Moaved
Iraqi Moaveds ( fa, معاودین عراقی) are a group of 350,000-650,000 Iraqi Persians who were deported from Iraq by the Ba'ath dictatorship because of their Iranian ancestry. Thousands of Shi'ah of Iranian origin but whose families had resided for generations in the Shi'ah religious centers of Karbala and Najaf, were expelled from Iraq, in the early 1970s and before Iran-Iraq war. The exact number of this group is not clear and ranging from 350,000 to 650,000. Many of them who could prove an Iranian origin in the court get Iranian citizenship (400,000) and some of them returned to Iraq after Saddam. Many Iraqi Moaveds hold or have held high positions in the government of Islamic Republic of Iran such as Shahroudi (head of Judicial system of Iran), General Mohammad Reza Naqdi (commander of the Basij paramilitary force), Hamid-Reza Assefi and Ali Akbar Salehi (Minister of Foreign Affairs). Iraqi Persians (, ) or Iranians in Iraq (, ) are Iraqi citizens of Persian descent and background. Persians have had a long presence in Iraq, since the Fall of Babylon. History In the 1970s, Saddam Hussein exiled between 350,000 to 650,000 Shia Iraqis of Iranian ancestry. Most of them went to Iran. Those who could prove an Iranian/Persian ancestry in Iran's court received Iranian citizenship (400,000) and most of them returned to Iraq immediately after his fall. The population of Persian Iraqis is currently 486,000 (not including Iranian residents in Iraq). Culture Most Persians Iraqis belong to , the same religion that most Iraqis belong to. However, a significant portion of them are of Sayyid Iranian heritage of Arab origin which were moved to Iran under the Safavids and returned to Arab lands after the fall of the Safavids. There is a large population of Iraqis in Iran, including Iranian citizens of Iraqi origin or descent, as well as Iraqi citizen expatriates. According to the 2001 Iran census, there were roughly 203,000 Iraqis living in Iran; a UNHCR report counts 204,000 Iraqis living in Iran. Mohammad Reza Naqdi
Mohammad Reza Naqdi (also spelled "Naghdi"; fa, محمدرضا نقدی) is a senior officer in the Revolutionary Guards. Background According to the biography published by the semi-official Fars News Agency, Naqdi was born in March 1961 in a middle-class religious family in Shapour neighbourhood of Tehran. Aging 16, he enrolled in University of Guilan in 1977 and co-founded its '' Anjoman-e Eslami''. He helped founding Jihad of Construction in June 1979, before joining the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Unit. ''The Majalla'' claims that Naqdi is an Iraqi national with Iranian and Persian origins, son of Ali Akbar Thamahniy Shams, who was expelled in 1980 among convoys of Moaveds and was placed in the city of Naqadeh with his family. Ali Akbar Salehi ( fa, علیاکبر صالحی, ; born 24 March 1949) is an Iranian academic, diplomat and former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, who served in this position from 2009 to 2010 and also from 2013 to 2021. Sayyid Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi ( fa, سید محمود هاشمی شاهرودی, 15 August 1948 – 24 December 2018) was an Iranian Twelver Shia cleric and conservative politician who was the Chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council from 14 August 2017 until his death on 24 December 2018.
