Michael Thoennessen
Michael Thoennessen is a University Distinguished Professor at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams of Michigan State University (MSU) and an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Education and Career Michael Thoennessen received his Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1988. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee he joined the faculty of Michigan State University in the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the American Physical Society's Physical Review journals from 2017 until 2022. Facility For Rare Isotope Beams
The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is a scientific user facility for nuclear science, funded by the U.S. Office of Science, Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan. Michigan State University contributed an additional $212 million in various ways, including the land. MSU established and operates FRIB as a user facility for the Office of Nuclear Physics in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. At FRIB, scientists research the properties of rare isotopes to advance knowledge in the areas of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, Fundamental interactions, fundamental interactions of nuclei, and real-world applications of rare isotopes. Giant Dipole Resonance
In nuclear physics, giant resonance is a high-frequency collective excitation of atomic nuclei, as a property of many-body quantum systems. In the macroscopic interpretation of such an excitation in terms of an oscillation, the most prominent giant resonance is a collective oscillation of all protons against all neutrons in a nucleus. In 1947, G. C. Baldwin and G. S. Nuclear Drip Line
The nuclear drip line is the boundary beyond which atomic nuclei are unbound with respect to the emission of a proton or neutron. An arbitrary combination of protons and neutrons does not necessarily yield a stable atomic nucleus, nucleus. One can think of moving up or to the right across the table of nuclides by adding a proton or a neutron, respectively, to a given nucleus. However, adding nucleons one at a time to a given nucleus will eventually lead to a newly formed nucleus that immediately decays by emitting a proton (or neutron). Colloquially speaking, the nucleon has ''leaked'' or ''dripped'' out of the nucleus, hence giving rise to the term ''drip line''. Modular Neutron Array
The Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) is a large-area, high-efficiency neutron detector that is used in basic research of rare isotopes at Michigan State University's National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), a nuclear physics research facility. It is specifically designed for detecting neutrons stemming from breakup reactions of fast fragmentation beams. Detector array The Modular Neutron Array consists of 144 individual detector modules. Each module is based on a plastic scintillator measuring 10 cm by 10 cm by 200 cm. This scintillator bar is fitted with light guides on each end that direct the light into one photo-multiplier tube on each end.
