Myrtaceae (), the myrtle family, is a family of dicotyledonous plants placed within the order Myrtales. Myrtle, pōhutukawa, bay rum tree, clove, guava, acca (feijoa), allspice, and eucalyptus are some notable members of this group. All species are woody, contain essential oils, and have flower parts in multiples of four or five. The leaves are evergreen, alternate to mostly opposite, simple, and usually entire (i.e., without a toothed margin). The flowers have a base number of five petals, though in several genera, the petals are minute or absent. The stamens are usually very conspicuous, brightly coloured, and numerous. She appeared in Terry Gilliam's 1985 cult film ''Brazil'', in a 1988 episode of Crimewatch, and had a role in the 1980s drama Together. Myrtle McAteer (June 12, 1878 – October 26, 1952) was an American tennis player around the turn of the 20th century. Tennis career At the U.S. National Championships (now known as the U.S. Open), McAteer won the singles title in 1900, and doubles titles in 1899 and 1901. She also was a singles finalist in 1901, a doubles finalist in 1900, and a mixed doubles finalist in 1901. She won the 1899 U.S. National Championships in women's doubles tennis, alongside her teammate Dr. Jane Craven. McAteer was also the first singles champion of the storied event in Cincinnati. Myrtle "Molly" Kool (February 23, 1916 – February 25, 2009) was a Canadian sea captain. She is recognized as being one of the first registered female sea captains or ship masters in North America. She was one of the first female Master Mariners in Canada. Early life Myrtle Kool was born in Alma, New Brunswick, the daughter of Myrtle Anderson and Paul Kool, a Dutch sailor, the second of five siblings. Margaret Victoria Anderson (September 2, 1898 – October 12, 1993) known professionally as Myrtle Lind was an American film actress. She was one of Mack Sennett's Bathing Beauties and appeared in several comedy films including with Oliver Hardy and John Gilbert. Myrtle Rae Holthaus Hazard (1892 – May 19, 1951), later Myrtle Gambrill, was an American electrician and radio operator in the United States Coast Guard during World War I. She was the first woman to enlist in the Coast Guard, and the only woman to serve in the Coast Guard during World War I. Early life Myrtle Rae Holthaus was from Baltimore, the daughter of Charles H. Holthaus and Lillian (Lillie) Otto Holthaus. Hazard, who survived polio as a girl, learned radio and telegraph skills in an evening course offered at the YMCA in Baltimore. Mary Caroline "Myrtle" Page Fillmore (August 6, 1845 – October 6, 1931) was an American who was co-founder of Unity, a church within the New Thought Christian movement, along with her husband Charles Fillmore.
