Lithomyrtus Obtusa
''Lithomyrtus obtusa'', commonly known as beach myrtella, is a flowering plant species in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. It occurs in coastal areas in New Guinea and Queensland, Australia. It is a shrub that grows to between 1 and 2 metres high. Leaves have recurved edges and are hairy on the underside. Pink flowers appear between January and September in the species' native range. These are followed by globose to cylindrical fruit with a persistent calyx. In 1770, plant material was collected at Cape Grafton, Endeavour River and Point Lookout () (not to be confused with Point Lookout, also named by Cook), by botanists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander during Lieutenant James Cook's first voyage of discovery. However, the species was not formally described until 1834 by Austrian botanist Stephan Endlicher who gave it the name ''Fenzlia obtusa''. The species was transferred to the genus ''Myrtella ''Myrtella'' is a genus of plants in the Myrtaceae described as a genus in 1877 ... Lithomyrtus Retusa
''Lithomyrtus retusa'' is a member of the family Myrtaceae native to Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland. It was first described in 1834 by Stephan Endlicher as ''Fenzlia retusa,'' but in 1999 it was assigned to the genus, ''Lithomyrtus'', to give its currently accepted name, by Neil Snow and Gordon Guymer. The small tree or shrub typically grows to a height of . It blooms between January and December producing white-pink flowers. Myrtaceae
Myrtaceae (), the myrtle family, is a family of dicotyledonous plants placed within the order Myrtales. Myrtle, pōhutukawa, bay rum tree, clove, guava, acca (feijoa), allspice, and eucalyptus are some notable members of this group. All species are woody, contain essential oils, and have flower parts in multiples of four or five. The leaves are evergreen, alternate to mostly opposite, simple, and usually entire (i.e., without a toothed margin). The flowers have a base number of five petals, though in several genera, the petals are minute or absent. The stamens are usually very conspicuous, brightly coloured, and numerous. Evolutionary history Scientists hypothesize that the family Myrtaceae arose between 60 and 56 million years ago (Mya) during the Paleocene era. Pollen fossils have been sourced to the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. The breakup of Gondwana during the Cretaceous period (145 to 66 Mya) geographically isolated disjunct taxa and allowed for rapid ... Uromyrtus
''Uromyrtus'' is a genus of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae described as a genus in 1941. The greatest diversity of species are found in New Caledonia and the remainder are found in Australia, New Guinea and Borneo.Govaerts, R., Sobral, N., Ashton, P., Barrie, F., Holst, B.K., Landrum, L.L., Matsumoto, K., Fernanda Mazine, F., Nic Lughadha, E., Proença, C. & al. (2008). World Checklist of Myrtaceae: 1-455. Kew Publishing, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The flowers occur singly in the axils of the leaves and typically point downwards. In this respect the genus superficially resembles the neotropical genus '' Ugni'', but evidence from DNA sequencing studies suggests the genera are not closely related. New Guinea
New Guinea (; Hiri Motu: ''Niu Gini''; , fossilized , also known as Papua or historically ) is the List of islands by area, world's second-largest island, with an area of . Located in Melanesia in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, the island is separated from Mainland Australia, Australia by the wide Torres Strait, though both landmasses lie on the same continental shelf, and were united during episodes of low sea level in the Pleistocene glaciations as the combined landmass of Sahul. Numerous smaller islands are located to the west and east. The island's name was given by Spanish explorer Yñigo Ortiz de Retez during his maritime expedition of 1545 due to the perceived resemblance of the indigenous peoples of the island to those in the Guinea (region), African region of Guinea. The eastern half of the island is the major land mass of the nation of Papua New Guinea. The western half, known as Western New Guinea, forms a part of Indonesia and is organized as the provinces of Pap ...
