Mydas Clavatus
''Mydas clavatus'', the clubbed mydas fly, is a species of Mydas fly that is native to temperate, eastern North America. It is named for its clubbed antennae, which is however a general feature of the Mydas flies. An orange to red mark on the abdomen is distinctive. It is a Batesian mimic of certain Pompilidae, spider wasps, and is consequently quite bold in its movements. Adults fly in mid-summer. Description They are large, black and somewhat glabrate flies that measure some 25 to 30 mm in length, with a wingspan that may exceed 50 mm. A prominent orange to red mark is evident on the ventral side of the second abdominal segment. Their visual mimicry is apparently complemented by curling and jabbing of the abdomen in a mock stinging routine. Biology The eggs are deposited singly in soil or rotting wood. The larvae, as with ''Mydas brunneus, M. brunneus'' and ''Mydas tibialis, M. tibialis'', are predatory on the larvae of deadwood-feeding scarab beetles (''Osmoderma'' ... Pierre-Justin-Marie Macquart
Pierre-Justin-Marie Macquart (8 April 1778 – 25 November 1855) was a French entomologist specialising in the study of Fly, flies. He worked on world species as well as European and described many new species. Biography Early life Macquart was born in Hazebrouck, on 8 April 1778. He was interested in natural history from an early age due to his older brother who was an ornithologist and a Fellow of the Société de Sciences de l’Agriculture et des Arts de la Ville de Lille and whose bird collection became the foundation of the societies museum, the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Lille. A second brother founded a botanic garden with a collection of over 3000 species of plants. Macquart, too became interested in natural history. In 1796, he joined the staff of General Armand Samuel then campaigning in the French Revolutionary Wars: Campaigns of 1796, Revolutionary Wars. He was a secretary and draftsman. Charles Willison Johnson
Charles Willison Johnson (October 26, 1863 – July 19, 1932) was an American naturalist who specialized in entomology (especially Diptera) and malacology, making significant contributions in both fields. He was a mentor and inspiration to many students and young scientists such as William J. Clench (who founded a publication named '' Johnsonia'' in his honor). Johnson was Curator of the Wagner Free Institute of Science, 1888–1903, then was Principal Curator at the Boston Society of Natural History, 1903–1932. He assisted Henry Augustus Pilsbry with '' The Nautilus'', an important American malacological publication. Although both were credited on the title page as "Editors and Publishers", Johnson was the business manager and Pilsbry was the editor, with Johnson acting as editor when Pilsbry was on extended field expeditions. Biography Charles Johnson was born to Albert Fletcher Johnson and Sarah Willison Johnson in Morris Plains, New Jersey. He attended public and ... Charles Howard Curran
Charles Howard Curran (20 March 189423 January 1972) was a Canadian entomologist who specialized in Diptera. Curran's main taxonomic interests were in brachyceran flies, particularly the flower flies Syrphidae, in which he described 723 species. He described 2,648 species over his career. He was active in the study of insect control. His 1934 work ''The Families and Genera of North American Diptera'' was an important and comprehensive work on the topic of North American fly genera. Biography Charles Howard Curran was born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1894. He was one of seven children, and preferred to go by his middle name Howard or his initials C. H. rather than Charles. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was sent to France to fight in World War I, serving from 1916 to 1918 as a machine gunner. Upon his return to Canada, he studied at the Ontario Agricultural College, gaining his bachelors degree in 1922. Continuing his story of entomology, he earned a Master ... Luigi Bellardi
Luigi Bellardi (18 May 1818 – 17 September 1889) was an Italian malacologist and entomologist who specialised in Diptera. Bellardi was born in Genoa and died in Turin. His collection is in the Turin Museum of Natural History In 1872, then a professor at Liceo Gioberti, Luigi Bellardi began ''I molluschi dei terreni terziari del Piemonte della Liguria'', a work on molluscs of the Middle and Early Tertiary in the Mediterranean basin. In 1888 he published the five parts dealing with Cephalopoda, Pteropoda and the first families of Gastropoda. In 1889 his student Prof. Federico Sacco (1864–1948) took over this work and published 25 more sections partly based on Bellardi’s work on this species-rich fossil group. A list of his publications can be found at the database WoRMS The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is a taxonomic database that aims to provide an authoritative and comprehensive catalogue and list of names of marine organisms.
