Musée D'art Et D'histoire (Fribourg)
The Musée d'art et d'histoire is a museum of art and history in the town of Fribourg in Switzerland, founded in 1774 by Tobie Gerfer. It is now housed in two main buildings - the 16th century hôtel Ratzé and a former abattoir - on either side of rue de Morat and linked by an underground passageway. The arrangement of its galleries dates to a redisplay in 1981. It mainly houses sculptures, paintings and decorative art produced in the town from the medieval era to the present day as well as 17th and 18th century historical items. It includes a glass-working gallery and a gallery devoted to the sculptor Adèle d'Affry alias Marcello. or is the capital of the Swiss canton of Fribourg and district of La Sarine. Located on both sides of the river Saane/Sarine, on the Swiss Plateau, it is a major economic, administrative and educational centre on the cultural border between German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland. History Prehistory The region around Fribourg has been settled since the Neolithic period, although few remains have been found. These include some flint tools found near Bourguillon, as well as a stone hatchet and bronze tools. A river crossing was located in the area during the Roman Era. The main activity in the Swiss plateau went through the area to the north, however, and was instead centered around the valley of the river Broye and Aventicum. Adèle D'Affry
Adelaide Nathalie Marie Hedwig Philippine d'Affry, Duchess of Castiglione Colonna, also went under the pseudonym Marcello, (6 July 1836 – 14 July 1879). She was a painter and sculptor, particularly known for her busts, which she exhibited at the Salon (Paris), Paris Salon. Early life D'Affry was born in Fribourg and was the eldest daughter of Count Louis d'Affry (1810-1841) and Lucie de Maillardoz (1816-1897), the daughter of Philippe de Maillardoz, Marquis de Maillardoz. The d'Affry's were a military family: Louis d'Affry (1743–1810), her great-grandfather, was the first Landammann of Switzerland. Count Louis-Auguste-Augustin d'Affry, her great-grandfather, devoted himself to engraving and documenting scenes from military life. His son, Charles, served under Bonaparte.
