Music Of Western Sahara
The inhabitants of the Western Sahara have created both traditional as well as modern music styles. Sahrawi music shares much in common with neighbouring musical traditions, such as those of Mauritania and southern Morocco, and retains aspects of pre-colonial heritage. The '' tbal'' is the basic percussion instrument, while the traditional string instrument called ''Tidinit,'' has largely been replaced by the electric guitar. Some performers are tribespeople who lived a nomadic existence before the Western Sahara War against Morocco between 1975 and 1991, which was true of the family of Mariem Hassan. The first Sahrawi music album, titled ''Polisario vencerá'', was recorded live in Barcelona, in 1982 by the band Shahid El Uali. From 1998, Nubenegra (a Spanish music label) marketed several Sahrawi music CDs in the United States and Germany, with a first release of a three-disc box titled '' Sahrauis: The Music of the Western Sahara''. Tiris (band)
Tiris is a band formed by Sahrawi refugees at the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria. Their lyrics are about love, loss, and their long struggle and aspirations for independence in their homeland of Western Sahara. Their name honours of a southern zone of their country, known traditionally for being a land of holy men, poets and musicians. The 9-member group made their first international major performance at the Festival au Désert, in Essakane, Mali in January 2006. The festival's director Manny Ansar defined them as "One of the best performances this year-absolutely wonderful!! I am delighted Tiris were able to participate!". Programmed for the opening night, they had to perform again on the last night by popular demand. Shouka (album)
''Shouka'' () is the second album of Sahrawi singer Mariem Hassan. It was recorded again at Axis studios, in Madrid, and produced by Manuel Domínguez, who is also the boss of the label Nubenegra. The album reached Number 1 on the World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) in March 2010. "Shouka", the central song that titles the album, is a new experience in the Sahrawi music, as it is structured as a cantata. Taking the verses of Sahrawi poet Lamine Allal, Hassan developed a nine paragraph critical response to the 1976 speech of then Spanish opposition leader and later president of Spain Felipe González at the Sahrawi refugee camps (he compromised Spanish Socialist Workers' Party support to the Sahrawi people until "the final victory"), by using all scales and rhythms of the Haul. ''Deseos'' () is the 2005 debut solo album of the Sahrawi singer Mariem Hassan. The album was recorded at Axis estudios in Madrid, and produced by guitarist Baba Salama, who died of leukemia one week before the release of the album. With the use of two electric guitars (played by Baba Salama and Boika Hassan, Mariem's brother) and two (played by Fatta Sadaf and Leila), the album had been hailed as a fresh actualization of the traditional Sahrawi Haul traditional music. The song "La Tumchu anni" is one of the highlights, a picturesque desert blues. It also contains one of Mariem's most known songs, "La Intifada", about the 2005 Sahrawi Independence Intifada. Najm Allal (, born 1966) is a singer, guitarist and writer of lyrics in Spanish from Western Sahara. Biography Life He was born in a nomadic family at the ''Ued'' Hawa, near Smara (Western Sahara) in 1966. All his brothers and sisters do poetry, and his brother Mohamed Lamin and Najm were musicians. His father worked in a Spanish company who constructed a road in the zone. In 1975, he fled with all his family to Tifariti, then Mahbes and finally Tindouf. The next year he started school in the Refugee camps in Tindouf Province, Algeria, Sahrawi refugee camps. He takes secondary education in Algerian high schools. When he finished his studies, he had to do military service, where he learned the accordion and acoustic guitar. He subsequently joined the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement, SPLA in 1986, as part of the Sahrawi military band. Mohamed Alí Amar (; born 5 November 1966), known as Nayim (), is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a central midfielder.
