Museen Am Meer
Museen am Meer (Museums on the Sea; styled museen am meer) is an association of eight museums in the city centre of Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on the edge of Kiel Fjord. The consortium was founded in 2010. The project The responsible bodies of the eight museums in the project are the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Kiel University), the GEOMAR , Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the Landeshauptstadt Kiel (capital city kiel). The museums Collection of Classical Antiquities Antikensammlung Kiel has a collection of Greek vases as well as casts of important Roman and Greek sculptures unique to Schleswig-Holstein. Kiel ( ; ) is the capital and most populous city in the northern Germany, German state of Schleswig-Holstein. With a population of around 250,000, it is Germany's largest city on the Baltic Sea. It is located on the Kieler Förde inlet of the Bay of Kiel and lies in the southeast of the Jutland Peninsula, on the mouth of the Schwentine River, approximately northeast of Hamburg. Antikensammlung Kiel
The Antikensammlung Kiel is the collection of antiquities held by the Classical Archaeology Department of the University of Kiel, housed in nine basement rooms in the Kunsthalle Kiel. It is the only museum of its kind in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and includes internationally important collections of pottery from Magna Graecia as well as classical sculptures and casts of such sculptures. History The university founded the collection in the first half of the 19th century, thanks to Peter Wilhelm Forchhammer, its first archaeology lecturer, supported by Otto Jahn (archaeologist), Otto Jahn. In 1840 he began raising funds for a museum of local and classical archaeology which he hoped would bring about an artistic revival in northern Germany and the following year he was given the first objects for the collection, even before the building was begun. The GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR), formerly known as the ''Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences'' ( German: ''Leibniz-Institut für Meereswissenschaften'', IFM-GEOMAR), is a research institute in Kiel, Germany. Kunsthalle Kiel
The Kunsthalle zu Kiel is an art museum in the German city of Kiel. With 2,000 m2 of display space, it is the largest museum in the city. It is north of the city centre on Düsternbrooker Weg. It has a lecture hall, a small cafe and a sculpture garden. Building The institution was founded in 1903 by Lotte Hegewisch of Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel to house an art gallery. Designed by Georg Lohr, the building was constructed between 1908 and 1909, opening on 14 November 1909 by Carl Neumann, chairman of the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Kunstverein, founded in 1843. It has a shell limestone facade in the Baroque Revival architecture, Neo-Baroque and Jugendstil styles. In front of the entrance are two bison sculptures by August Gaul. In the 1950s a new staircase was added, followed by an extension in 1986. In 2012 a re-design of the entrance hall was completed. Heinrich Ehmsen (9 August 1886 – 6 May 1964) was a German painter and graphic artist. Life Apprenticeship, School of Arts and Crafts Born in Kiel, Ehmsen, he was the son of a master and his wife. He started a four-year apprenticeship as a house painter in 1901.
