Munford, Alabama
Munford is a town in Talladega County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 1,351. It is the location of what has been called the last battle of the Civil War east of the Mississippi, the Battle of Munford on April 23, 1865, being one week after the Battle of Columbus (April 16, 1865) in Georgia. The battle was responsible for the last Confederate death east of the Mississippi River, whose name was Andrew Jackson Buttram. History Munford was initially incorporated in 1873. At some point in the 1880s, it either disincorporated or lost its charter. In 2000, Munford was classified as a census-designated place (CDP), and in 2002 formally incorporated again. Munford is also known for its importance in the American Civil War, where the Battle of Munford took place on April 23, 1865. Munford, Tennessee
Munford is a city in Tipton County, Tennessee. The population was 5,927 at the 2010 census, when it was listed as a town. History Beginning as a small village which grew around the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church in the early 1850s, it was officially named "Mt. Zion" after the opening of a post office there in 1856. This office closed in 1874, and in 1886 when Mt. Zion applied to the United States Post Office Department to have it reopened, the application was approved on the condition that it do so with a new name, to avoid confusion with Mt. Zion, Pennsylvania. At that time Pennsylvania was commonly abbreviated as "Penn" and Tennessee was commonly abbreviated "Tenn." The newly appointed Post Master G. B. Sale asked his daughter Lola to choose a name, and they agreed to name it after Colonel Richard Henry Munford (1807–1884) of Covington, Tennessee. Mary-Cooke Branch Munford (September 15, 1865 – July 3, 1938) was a Virginia activist for women's rights, civil rights, women's suffrage, and education. Life Mary-Cooke Branch was a native of Richmond, Virginia; she was the youngest daughter of James Read Branch and Martha Louise Patteson Branch. Her family, of English extraction, was prominent in local affairs; her grandfather, Thomas Branch, had served in the Confederate Congress, and nephews included the writer James Branch Cabell and the Episcopal preacher Walter Russell Bowie. Her father drowned accidentally three years after her birth in a bridge collapse on the way to a Republican rally. Robyn Eileen Munford is a New Zealand social work researcher, and professor in the School of Social Work at Massey University. Her research concerns community development, young people's pathway to adulthood, and disability studies. Academic career Munford completed a Bachelor of Social Work at Massey University in 1978, and then Master of Social Work at the University of Calgary in 1983. Her 1989 PhD thesis at Massey University was titled'' The hidden costs of caring : women who care for people with intellectual disabilities.'' Thayer Munford Jr. (born September 18, 1999) is an American football offensive tackle for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Ohio State. Early life and high school Munford grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and initially attended La Salle High School. Before his senior year, he moved to Massillon, Ohio and transferred to Massillon Washington High School who were coached by his former coach at La Salle, Nate Moore. Moore and his wife took legal custody of Munford shortly before his senior year. He was originally ruled ineligible by the Ohio High School Athletic Association after it was ruled that his transfer was a violation of the organization's recruiting rules.
