Elsa Jane Forest Guerin
Elsa Jane Forest Guerin, better known as Mountain Charley, is thought to have been a woman who dressed as a man for most of her life. She lived in the American frontier for most of her life, and served in the American Civil War. She first dressed as a man to find work, and move west. Guerin enlisted to fight in the Civil War, and was promoted to first lieutenant for her work. She published a memoir about her life, ''Mountain Charley: Or, The adventures of Mrs. E. J. Guerin, who was thirteen years in male attire; an autobiography comprising a period of thirteen years life in the States, California, and Pike's Peak.'' There is some speculation as to whether she really existed. Biography When Guerin was 5 years old, she was sent to attend school in New Orleans. Little is known about Guerin's early life. Charlotte Hatfield
Charlotte Hatfield, also known as Charley Hatfield or "Mountain Charley", was a female soldier for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Early life The real last name of Charlotte is unknown, although according to a few sources her true name was Elsa Jane Guerin. The name she used to enlist in the Union Army was Charley Hatfield. She was born in a rural Iowa Territory town in about 1840. In 1858, her mother died when Charlotte was 18 years old. Her step-father treated Charlotte as a hired hand. When she was only 19 years old, she eloped, but her husband spent most of his time away from Charlotte, due to gambling habits. After she gave birth to a stillborn baby, Charlotte's husband beat her severely and left her. She later heard that her husband left her to be with another woman. Charles Henry McKiernan
Charles Henry McKiernan (c. 1825–1892), known popularly as "Mountain Charley," was one of the first Euro-American settlers in the Santa Cruz Mountains region of California. McKiernan was a hunter, rancher, teamster, road-builder and stage-line operator. His personal motto was allegedly: "Right wrongs nobody." Part of McKiernan's local fame was due to his disfigurement by a grizzly bear. As a consequence, "it was said of McKiernan that no grizzly would argue with him over the right-of-way on a trail, a typical tall tale that in no way detracted from McKiernan's sterling reputation." Charley Parkhurst
Charley Darkey Parkhurst (born Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst; January 17, 1812 – December 28, 1879) also known as "One-Eyed Charley" or "Six-Horse Charley", was an American stagecoach driver, farmer and rancher in California. Raised in New England and assigned female at birth, Parkhurst Runaway (dependent), ran away as a youth, taking the name Charley. Now presenting as a man, he started work as a stable hand and learned to Domestication of the horse, handle horses, including to drive coaches drawn by multiple horses. He worked in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, traveling to Georgia for associated work. In his late 30s, Parkhurst sailed to California following the Gold rush, Gold Rush in 1849; there he became a noted stagecoach driver. In 1868, he may have been the first person who was assigned female at birth to vote in a presidential election in California.
