Mount Mitchell
Mount Mitchell (''Attakulla'' in Cherokee) is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland North America east of the Mississippi River. It is located near Burnsville in Yancey County, North Carolina in the Black Mountain subrange of the Appalachians about northeast of Asheville. It is protected by Mount Mitchell State Park and surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. Mount Mitchell's elevation is above sea level. Mount Mitchell is ranked 31st by topographic isolation. Geography The peak is the highest mountain in the United States east of the Mississippi River, and the highest in all of eastern North America south of the Arctic Cordillera. The Holland Range () is a rugged coastal mountain range in the Ross Dependency, Antarctica, on the west coast of the Ross Ice Shelf. It is about long. Location The Holland Range lies just west of the Ross Ice Shelf and extends from Robb Glacier in the northeast to Lennox-King Glacier in the south. To the north of the range is the "island" that holds Cape Lyttelton. To the west, on the west side of Robb Glacier, is the Queen Elizabeth Range. To the south, across the Lennox-King Glacier, is the Queen Alexandra Range. The range was named by the Ross Sea Committee for Sir Sidney Holland, who as Prime Minister of New Zealand supported that nation's participation in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1956–58). Mount Mitchell ( Aboriginal: ''Cooyinnirra''), is a twin-peaked volcanic mountain with an elevation above sea level of , located in the Main Range, is about west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and immediately south of Cunninghams Gap. Features and history The peak to the south of the gap was named by Allan Cunningham in 1828 and today is part of the Main Range National Park. Cunningham named the mountain after the Surveyor-General, Thomas Mitchell. To the north of Cunninghams Gap is Mount Cordeaux, while Spicers Peak is located a small distance to the south east. A trail, classified as grade 4, winds up to the main summit which offers some great views. From the peak on a clear day the tallest buildings in Brisbane can be seen, as can the D'Aguilar Range, Teviot Range, Fassifern Valley and many other parts of the Scenic Rim. NOAAS ''Mount Mitchell'' (S 222) was an American survey vessel in commission in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1970 to 1995. Prior to her NOAA career, she was in commission in the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as USC&GS ''Mount Mitchell'' (MSS 22) from 1968 to 1970. In 2003, she returned to service as the private research ship R/V ''Mt. Mitchell''. Construction and commissioning ''Mount Mitchell'' was built for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as a "medium survey ship" (MSS) at the Aerojet-General Shipyards in Jacksonville, Florida.
