Mount Benson () is a mountain (2,270 m) standing at the northeast side of Thomas Glacier and west of Obelya Glacier, 4.6 mi east of Mount Osborne, in Doyran Heights, southeastern Sentinel Range in Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica. It was mapped by the USGS from surveys and USN air photos, 1957–59. It was named by the US-ACAN for Robert F. Benson, seismologist at the IGY South Pole Station in 1957. The Mount Benson wine region is a wine region in the south east of the Australian state of South Australia located on the continental coastline about from the state capital of Adelaide and halfway between the towns of Kingston SE and Robe. Mount Benson is one of six wine growing regions that are located in the Limestone Coast wine zone. History The region's first grapes were planted in the 1980s by local farmers well attuned to Mount Benson's climatic conditions. These grapes would later make way for the region's own style of delicate, cool-climate, maritime-influenced wines. Viticulture and climate The Mount Benson vineyards are planted on gently undulating terrain ranging from five to 50 metres above sea level and attracted the interest of viticulturalists due to prevalent loam-based terra rossa soils that sit atop free-draining limestone, which formed over millions of years while the region was underwater. Mount Benson is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the state's south-east coast overlooking Guichen Bay which is part of the body of water known in Australia as the Southern Ocean and by international authorities as the Great Australian Bight. It is about south-east of the Adelaide city centre and north-west of the centre of Mount Gambier. Boundaries were created on 28 January 1999 for the "long established name" whose ultimate source is a stockman named Benson who was employed by the pastoralist, Charles Bonney, and whose name was given to the hill called Mount Benson by Charles Bonney according to one source while another source indicates that the hill was named by George Grey, the then Governor of South Australia. A school operated within what is now the locality between the years 1887 and 1970. The locality contains the hill of the same name and is within the extent of the wine region of the same name. Mount Benson (British Columbia)
Mount Benson ( hur, Tatch-to-lan, Taitookton; chn, Wakesiah) is a mountain located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia located west of Nanaimo. At one time, there was road access to the peak as there was a fire lookout at the summit. Today, the road is closed to vehicles but the mountain has become popular with local hikers as it has great views of the Strait of Georgia, the mainland Coast Mountains of British Columbia, the Nanaimo River valley, and the Vancouver Island Ranges, including Mount Arrowsmith. Mount Benson was named in 1859 by Captain Richards, RN, after his friend Alfred Robson Benson, MD, a physician from Whitby (Yorkshire), who was in the Hudson's Bay Company service 1857-62. During the last ice age, most of Vancouver Island was covered in a sheet of ice almost 2 kilometres thick, including the area around Mount Benson. Mount Benson Elementary was a public elementary school located in the Wellington neighbourhood of Nanaimo, British Columbia and was part of School District 68 Nanaimo-Ladysmith. It was closed in 2008. Opened on the historic Wellington Public School Site, Mount Benson Elementary was the oldest operating school site in British Columbia. History The original school site was provided by Robert Dunsmuir of Dunsmuir & Diggle Co to accommodate a public school for their new coal town of Wellington and the families working in the Wellington Colliery. Mount Benson (Alaska)
Mount Benson is a mountain summit located in the Kenai Mountains, on the Kenai Peninsula, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The peak is situated in Chugach National Forest, rising above the Resurrection River and Resurrection Bay, south of Resurrection Peaks, north of Marathon Mountain, and northwest of Seward, Alaska. Originally named Iron Mountain, the mountain's name was officially changed in 1974 by the United States Geological Survey to honor Benny Benson (1913-1972), who at age 13 designed Alaska's flag in 1927, as a student in Seward. Climate Based on the Köppen climate classification, Mount Benson is located in a subarctic climate zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and mild summers. Temperatures can drop below −20 °C with wind chill factors below −30 °C. This climate supports a spruce and hemlock forest on the lower slopes.
