''Mother's Happiness'' is a 1926 Chinese drama film directed by Shi Dongshan and written by Zhu Shouju Zhu Shouju (1892 – 31 December 1966), born Zhu Junbo, also known by his pen name Haishang Shuomengren, was a Chinese author and filmmaker based in Shanghai. It is one of the earliest extant Chinese films, but a portion is still missing. Like most Chinese films from this period, it is a black-and-white silent film with both Chinese and English intertitles. The English title is ironic, because the mother in the story hardly enjoyed any happiness in her life. Shi Dongshan
Shi Dongshan (December 29, 1902 – February 23, 1955), born Shi Kuangshao, was one of the most prominent film directors and screenwriters in pre-Communist China, together with Chen Liting, Cai Chusheng, and Zheng Junli. His most notable film was '' Eight Thousand Li of Cloud and Moon'', released in 1947. He served in the Communist government after 1949, but was later persecuted and committed suicide in 1955. Career Shi Dongshan was born and raised in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. At the age of 17, he left his family and relocated to Zhangjiakou, finding brief work as a radio operator. Zhu Shilin
Zhu Shilin () (27 July 1899 – 5 January 1967), also romanised as Chu Shek Lin, was a Chinese film director, born in Taicang, Jiangsu, China. Zhu began his career in the thriving film industry of Shanghai, directing actresses like Ruan Lingyu with the Lianhua Film Company. After the war, Zhu moved to Hong Kong, where he founded the Longma Film Company along with fellow Shanghai emigrant Fei Mu. Between 1930 and 1964, he directed 80 films.
