Mosteiros is a ''concelho'' (municipality) of Cape Verde. Situated in the northeastern part of the island of Fogo, it covers 19% of the island area, and is home to 26% of its population. Its seat is the city Mosteiros (''Igreja''). Its population was 9,524 at the 2010 census, and its area is 89.45 km2. Subdivisions The municipality consists of one ''freguesia'' (civil parish), Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. Mosteiros (Ponta Delgada)
Mosteiros is a civil parish in the municipality of Ponta Delgada on the Portuguese island of São Miguel in the Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,123, in an area of . It contains the localities Chã das Machadas, Lomba dos Homens, Lombinha and Mosteiros. History It was only around 1480, that the first people began to settle this part of the island, mostly by the maritime access, for many years. The community of Mosteiros was built on ancestral fishing for many years, even as its territory was cultivated by farmers. The Mosteiros Islets ( pt, Ilhéus dos Mosteiros; literally, ''Islets of the Monasteries'') are four uninhabited rocky islets located about from the settlement of Mosteiros, off the extreme northwestern coast of the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. History and etymology The Mosteiros Islets gave the neighboring municipality of Mosteiros its name. According to Azorean chronicler Gaspar Frutuoso, the earliest settlers to the area thought the largest of the islets looked like a church or monastery, and therefore named the islets and their settlement Mosteiros.
