On November 3, 1999, a mass murder occurred inside a movie theater room at the Morumbi shopping mall in São Paulo, Brazil. Shopping Morumbi, or Morumbi Shopping, is a shopping centre located in the Itaim Bibi district of São Paulo, Brazil. Located near Morumbi Station in an area with a high concentration of businesses and hotels, the shopping centre is considered to be one of the most popular in the country by magazine Exame. On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside a Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, United States, during a midnight screening of the film '' The Dark Knight Rises''. Dressed in tactical clothing, James Holmes set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms. Twelve people were killed and 70 others were injured, 58 of them from gunfire. Carandiru Penitentiary
Carandiru Penitentiary, officially São Paulo House of Detention (Portuguese: ''Casa de Detenção de São Paulo'') was a prison located in São Paulo, Brazil. The prison was designed and built by Samuel das Neves in 1920, when it was considered a model-prison to meet the new demands of the 1890 criminal code. It was operational from 1956 to 2002 and, at its peak, was South America's largest penitentiary, housing over 8,000 inmates. In 1992 it was the site of the Carandiru massacre. It was demolished in 2002. Drauzio Varella, a noted Brazilian physician, volunteered as an unpaid physician in Carandiru from 1989 to 2001, in particular to address its AIDS epidemic.
