Morganton, Georgia
Morganton is a city in Fannin County, Georgia, United States. The population was 285 at the 2020 census. History Prior to European colonization, the area that is now Morganton was inhabited by the Cherokee people and other Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Morganton in 1856. The town's name is a transfer from Morganton, North Carolina. Morganton served as the seat of Fannin County from 1854 until 1895, when the seat was transferred to Blue Ridge. Geography Morganton is located in eastern Fannin County at (34.876616, -84.245432), on the northeast side of Blue Ridge Reservoir. Georgia State Route 60 passes through the city, leading northwest to U.S. Route 76 and southeast to Suches. Via SR 60 and old US 76, it is west to Blue Ridge, the county seat. Morganton is a city in and county seat of Burke County, North Carolina, United States. It is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Catawba River. The population was 17,474 at the 2020 census. Morganton is approximately northwest of Charlotte and 57 miles (92 km) east of Asheville. It is one of the principal cities in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History An influx of European settlers over the Blue Ridge Mountains led Morganton to become the first chartered town in western North Carolina in 1784. On April 17, 1865 there was a small skirmish fought in Morganton, as part of Stoneman's 1865 raid through North Carolina. Public welfare facilities, such as the North Carolina School for the Deaf: Main Building and Western North Carolina Insane Asylum, were first authorized by the state legislature in the late 19th century. Morganton, Tennessee
Morganton was a community that developed on the Little Tennessee River in Loudon County, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. It was located above the mouth of the river at its confluence with Bakers Creek, flowing westward from Maryville. During its heyday in the 19th century, Morganton thrived as a flatboat port and regional business center. An important ferry operated at Morganton for nearly 170 years providing service across the river. The abandoned townsite was submerged in the late 20th century by creation of Tellico Lake, part of the Tellico Dam hydroelectric project completed in 1979 by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Due largely to the decline in river trade that occurred in the mid-19th century following construction of railroads in East Tennessee, Morganton was mostly deserted by the late 1960s.
