Morecambe ( ) is a seaside town and civil parish in the City of Lancaster district of Lancashire, England, on Morecambe Bay, part of the Irish Sea. In 2011 the parish had a population of 34,768. Name The first use of the name was by John Whitaker (historian), John Whitaker in his ''History of Manchester'' (1771), when he refers to the "æstury of Moricambe". It next appears four years later in ''Antiquities of Furness'', where the bay is described as "the Morecambe Bay, Bay of Morecambe". That name is derived from the Roman name ''Moriancabris Æsturis'' shown on maps prepared for them by ''Claudius Ptolemœus'' (Ptolemy) from his original Greek maps. At this distance in time it is impossible to say if the name was originally derived from an earlier language (e.g. Celtic language) or from Greek. The Latin version describes the fourth inlet north from Wales on the west coast of England as Moriancabris Æsturis. Translated, this gives a more accurate description than the present ... Morecambe Bay
Morecambe Bay is an estuary in north-west England, just to the south of the Lake District National Park. It is the largest expanse of intertidal mudflats and sand in the United Kingdom, covering a total area of . In 1974, the second largest gas field in the UK was discovered west of Blackpool, with original reserves of over 7 trillion cubic feet (tcf) (200 billion cubic metres). At its peak, 15% of Britain's gas supply came from the bay but production is now in decline. Morecambe Bay is also an important wildlife site, with abundant birdlife and varied marine habitats. Natural features The rivers River Leven, Cumbria, Leven, River Kent, Kent, River Keer, Keer, River Lune, Lune and River Wyre, Wyre drain into the Bay, with their various estuaries making a number of peninsulas within the bay. Morecambe Railway Station
Morecambe is a railway station on the Morecambe Branch Line, which runs between and . The station, situated west of Lancaster, serves the town of Morecambe in Lancashire. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. History The current Truncated railway station termini, truncated two-platform station was opened on 29 May 1994, replacing the Midland Railway's earlier terminus, , which was situated further west, closer to the town's seafront. The old station building remains in use as a pub and restaurant, but its platforms have been demolished and the site is now occupied by a cinema and the Morecambe indoor market. That station was itself a replacement for the "Little" North Western Railway, North Western Railway's original two-platform terminus at Northumberland Street, which opened in 1851 and closed in March 1907. Morecambe Promenade Railway Station
Morecambe Promenade Station was a railway station in Morecambe, Lancashire, England. It was opened on 24 March 1907 by the Midland Railway and closed in February 1994. After twelve weeks break in passenger service for the revision of track work and signalling a new Morecambe railway station, Morecambe station was opened on a site closer to the town centre. The station opened as Morecambe and was renamed Morecambe Promenade in 1924. It reverted to Morecambe in 1968 and remained so until closure. History Built by the Midland Railway Company as the terminus of the former "little" North Western Railway, the promenade station, originally named just "Morecambe", first opened to passengers in 1907. Eric Morecambe
John Eric Bartholomew (14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984), known by his stage name Eric Morecambe, was an English comedian who together with Ernie Wise formed the double act Morecambe and Wise. The partnership lasted from 1941 until Morecambe's death in 1984. Morecambe took his stage name from his home town, the seaside resort of Morecambe in Lancashire. He was the co-star of the BBC1's television series ''The Morecambe & Wise Show'', which for the 1977 Christmas episode gained UK viewing figures of over 28 million people. ''Morecambe'' is a play by Tim Whitnall which celebrates the life of Eric Morecambe and is based on his life in the entertainment industry. The play was co-produced by Guy Masterson of Theatre Tours International and Feather Productions and premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the summer of 2009 and transferred to the Duchess Theatre in London's West End theatre, West End for a limited Christmas season running from 9 December 2009 until 17 January 2010. ''Morecambes first production received several awards including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment 2010, Scotsman Fringe First Award, Edinburgh 2009 and was nominated for several more including the Stage Award for Best Solo Performance Edinburgh 2009, The ITC Best Touring Production Award and WhatsOnStage Awards for Best Production and Best Actor.
