Montecristo (cigar)
Montecristo () is a brand of cigars and cigarettes produced separately and independently in Cuba by Habanos S.A., the national tobacco company, and in La Romana, Dominican Republic by Altadis, a subsidiary of British conglomerate Imperial Brands. History In July 1935, Alonso Menéndez purchased the Particulares Factory, makers of the ''Particulares'' brand and the lesser-known Byron. Immediately after its acquisition, he created a new brand named ''Montecristo''. The brand's name was inspired by ''The Count of Monte Cristo'', a novel written by Alexandre Dumas père, which was allegedly a very popular novel among the ''torcedores'' (cigar rollers) in their factory to have read by the '' lector'' on the rolling floor. Cigar
A cigar is a rolled bundle of dried and Fermentation, fermented tobacco leaves made to be Tobacco smoking, smoked. Cigars are produced in a variety of sizes and shapes. Since the 20th century, almost all cigars are made of three distinct components: the filler, the binder leaf which holds the filler together, and a wrapper leaf, which is often the highest quality leaf used. Alexandre Dumas (born Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, 24 July 1802 – 5 December 1870), also known as Alexandre Dumas , was a French novelist and playwright. His works have been translated into many languages and he is one of the most widely read French authors. Factory Name
In Cuban cigar production, the factory name or ''vitola de galera'' is a standard name given to the size of the cigar across all manufacturers. Each cigar has a factory name and a model name. The model names are up to the individual manufacturer, some simply use the factory name, but as you see in the example below, some choose a different name, and may have one or more cigars of the same size, but may all have different names. For example, the Emininentes (see coronas table below) is currently produced by two brands or manufacturers, H. Upmann and Partagas. H.Upmann sells it as'' 'Corona Major' ''and Partagas has two models in that size, the'' 'Coronas Senior' ''and the'' 'Petit Coronas Especiales' '', but regardless of manufacturer or model name, all three are Emininentes and are exactly the same size and shape. Cubatabaco, short for , is the Cuban state tobacco company. The company was formed in 1962, after the Cuban tobacco industry had been nationalized by Fidel Castro's socialist government. Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution () was the military and political movement that overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, who had ruled Cuba from 1952 to 1959. The revolution began after the 1952 Cuban coup d'état, in which Batista overthrew the emerging Cuban democracy and consolidated power. Among those who opposed the coup was Fidel Castro, then a young lawyer, who initially tried to challenge the takeover through legal means in the Cuban courts. Alfred Dunhill
Alfred Dunhill (30 September 1872 – 2 January 1959) was an English tobacconist, entrepreneur and inventor. He is the progenitor of Alfred Dunhill Limited, a London-based luxury goods firm (owned by Swiss company Richemont), and the Dunhill tobacco products company owned by British American Tobacco (now two independently owned entities). From 1893 Dunhill ran a company selling motoring accessories, and in 1902 opened a shop in Mayfair. He developed a pipe designed for motorists in 1904. He opened a tobacconist's shop in St James's in 1907, offering tailored tobacco blends. Shops were opened in New York and Paris during the 1920s. Hermann Dietrich Upmann
Hermann Dietrich Upmann (1 May 1816 in Bielefeld-Altstadt, Germany – 29 January 1894 Bremen, Germany) was a banker, merchant and cigar manufacturer in Cuba, creator of the H. Upmann 1844 brand. At 23 years old he embarked for the New World in 1839 to work for an import/export company, The Gravenhorst & Co. During the voyage, a Briton persuaded him to stay in Havana where the tobacco business was flourishing. Upmann accepted the suggestion. He learned the processes and secrets of cigar manufacturing, purchased a local cigar factory, and created the H. Upmann 1844 brand, which is among the oldest cigar brands in the world.
