Altitudinal zonation (or elevational zonation) in mountainous regions describes the natural layering of ecosystems that occurs at distinct elevations due to varying environmental conditions. Alpine tundra is a type of natural region or biome that does not contain trees because it is at high elevation, with an associated harsh climate.
