Molloy
Molloy or O'Molloy is an Irish surname, anglicised from Ó Maolmhuaidh, maolmhuadh meaning 'Proud Chieftain'. (See also Malloy.) They were part of the southern Uí Néill, the southern branch of the large tribal grouping claiming descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages, the fifth-century king who supposedly kidnapped St Patrick to Ireland. They held power over a large part of what is now Co Offaly, where the surname is still very common. A second family were the O Maoil Aodha, 'descendant of the devotee of (St) Aodh', from maol, literally 'bald', a reference to the distinctive tonsure sported by early Irish monks. As well as Molloy, this surname has also been anglicised as Mulloy, Malloy, Maloy, 'Miley' and 'Millea'. The name arose in east Connacht, in the Roscommon/east Galway region, and remains numerous there today. ''Molloy'' is a novel by Samuel Beckett first written in French and published by Paris-based Les Éditions de Minuit in 1951. The English translation, published in 1955, is by Beckett and Patrick Bowles. As part of the Trilogy ''Molloy'' is the first of three novels initially written in Paris between 1947 and 1950; this trio, which includes ''Malone Dies'' and '' The Unnamable'', is collectively referred to as ‘The Trilogy’ or ‘the Beckett Trilogy.’ Beckett wrote all three books in French and then, aside from some collaborative work on ''Molloy'' with Patrick Bowles, served entirely as his own English-language translator; he did the same for most of his plays. Molloy University
Molloy University is a private Roman Catholic university in Rockville Centre, New York. It provides more than 50 academic undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs for over 5,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. History In 1941 the Sisters of St. Dominic purchased 25 acres in Rockville Centre. In 1955 the Dominican Sisters of Amityville founded Molloy Catholic College. It was established as a women's college appointing Mother Anselma Ruth, O.P., Ph.D., as the first president. A year later the first institutional building called Quealy Hall opened. Soon after, Mother Bernadette de Lourdes, O.P., was appointed as the second president followed by the opening of Kellenberg Hall. Archbishop Molloy High School (also called Molloy, Archbishop Molloy, or AMHS) is a co-educational, college preparatory, Catholic school for grades 9-12, located on on 83-53 Manton Street, Briarwood, Queens, New York. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn . Molloy has an endowment of about $6 million (as of November 2010). The school's current principal is Darius Penikas, who started his term in 2015. Molloy's motto is "Non Scholae Sed Vitae," which is Latin for "Not For School, But For Life". History The school is staffed by the Marist Brothers, founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat. In 1892, Br. Molloy Deep
The Molloy Deep (also known as the Molloy Hole) is a bathymetric feature in the Fram Strait, within the Greenland Sea east of Greenland and about 160 km west of Svalbard. It is the location of the deepest point in the Arctic Ocean. The Molloy Deep, Molloy Hole, Molloy Fracture Zone, and Molloy Ridge were named after Arthur E. Molloy, a U.S. Navy research scientist who worked in the North Atlantic, North Pacific and Arctic Oceans in the 1950s-1970s. The outer rim of the trench is at a depth of and contains about 600 km2 inside the rim, descending to approximately at its greatest depth. The basin floor measures about 220 km2, and is the deepest point in the Arctic Ocean.
