Modersmålets Sång
Modersmålets sång () is a Finland Swedish song, which is also the unofficial anthem of Finland Swedes, however it is also played as a celebration song. The song is usually played on 6 November for Finnish Swedish Heritage Day. The song was composed by Johan Fridolf Hagfors in 1897 and performed for the first time on May 6 1898 in University of Helsinki ballroom. The song was originally composed for the Akademiska Sångföreningen. Finnish Swedish Heritage Day
Finnish Swedish Heritage Day ( Swedish: ''svenska dagen'', Finnish: ''ruotsalaisuuden päivä'') is a general flag flying day, which is celebrated in Finland on 6 November. The day celebrates the Swedish-speaking population of Finland, their culture, and the bilinguality of Finland. The main celebrations are aired on the radio, and many smaller celebrations are held around Finland in schools. Usually, the song Modersmålets sång is sung, celebrating the mother tongue. The Finnish Swedish Heritage Day is celebrated on the same day as Gustavus Adolphus Day in Sweden, the day that king Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was killed at the Battle of Lützen in 1632. The Finland Swedish Heritage Day was created in 1908, when the newly founded Swedish People's Party of Finland decided to celebrate a day for the Swedes. Johan Fridolf Hagfors
Johan Fridolf Hagfors (11 March 1857 – 18 August 1931) was a Finnish newspaper publisher, music critic and composer, most known for having composed the two songs ''Modersmålets sång'' (The mother tongue's song) and ''Ålänningens sång'' (Song of the Ålender). Born in Orimattila, he got a Candidatus philologiæ, Cand.phil degree in 1881. In 1883, he became publicist of the small Åbo paper ''Turun Lehti'' which was published in Finnish language, Finnish but at the same time Svecoman movement, Svecoman; it became the only newspaper with that combination to reach a wide readership. The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki (, ), abbreviated AS, colloquially also known as (), is a Finland-Swedish academic male-voice choir in Helsinki, Finland. The choir was founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius and is the oldest extant choir in Finland.
