The Mitchell River is a river in Far North Queensland, Australia. The river rises on the Atherton Tableland about northwest of Cairns, Queensland, Cairns and flows about northwest across Cape York Peninsula from Mareeba, Queensland, Mareeba to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The river's Drainage basin, watershed covers an area of . The Mitchell has the state's largest discharge, at annually, but is intermittent and may be dry for part of the year. Southedge Dam, Lake Mitchell is the main water storage facility on the river. It was named by Ludwig Leichhardt on 16 June 1845 after Sir Thomas Mitchell (explorer), Thomas Mitchell while he was on his overland expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. Mann River, a perennial stream of the Clarence River catchment, is located in the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales, Australia. Course and features Mann River rises at Llangothlin Lake, on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range, near Ben Lomond and flows generally north north east, east, north east and north, joined by four tributaries including the Nymboida River, Henry River and Yarrow River, before reaching its confluence with the Clarence River, southwest of Baryulgil. The river descends over its course; and flows through the Mann River Nature Reserve. The Mitchell River is a tributary of the Quesnel River, approximately long, near the eastern boundary of British Columbia, Canada. It originates in glaciers in the northern Columbia Mountains and flows generally southwest through Mitchell Lake into Quesnel Lake, and its water eventually travels down the Fraser River to the Pacific Ocean. Almost half of its course is flooded in natural lakes. Via the Yadkin it is part of the watershed of the Pee Dee River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean. The Mitchell rises in eastern Alleghany County in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and flows generally southeastwardly through Surry County, where it joins the Yadkin River about 5 mi (8 km) northeast of Elkin at the community of Burch. In Surry County, it collects the short South Fork Mitchell River, which has also been known historically as "Mill Creek," "South Fork Creek," and "South Fork Mitchells River."
