The Mission sui iuris of Cunene was a short-lived missionary jurisdiction in present Angola, then still a Portuguese colony. History The mission sui iuris of Cunene was established in 1881, on territory split off from the then Apostolic Prefecture of Cimbebasia (the remainder of which was on 1 August 1892 renamed as Apostolic Prefecture of Upper Cimbebasia in Portuguese Angola, later Cubango in Angola, then suppressed in 1940). It was exempt, i.e. not part of any ecclesiastical province. No ecclesiastical superiors seem to be recorded. A mission '' sui iuris'', or in Latin ''missio sui iuris'' (plural ''missions sui iuris''); also spelled mission(s) sui juris), also known as an independent mission, is a rare type of Roman Catholic missionary pseudo-diocesan jurisdiction, ranking below an apostolic prefecture and an apostolic vicariate, in an area with very few Catholics, often desolate or remote. The clerical head is styled Ecclesiastical Superior and can be a regular cleric, titular or diocesan bishop, archbishop or even a cardinal, but if of episcopal rank often resides elsewhere (notably, in another diocese or the Vatican) in chief of his primary office there. It can either be exempt (i.e. directly subject to the Holy See, like Apostolic prefectures and Apostolic Vicariates), or suffragan of a Metropolitan Archbishop, hence part of his ecclesiastical province. The Archdiocese of Huambo ( la, Archidioecesis Huambensis) is a Latin Metropolitan archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in western Angola. The cathedral see of the archbishop is the Marian Cathedral of the Conception of Our Lady (Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição), in Huambo. By 2013, the archdiocese had approximately 1.5 million Roman Catholics and 75 diocesan priests. History On 9 September 1940, the Diocese of Nova Lisboa was established on assembled territories split off from the Diocese of São Paulo de Loanda and mission sui iuris of Cunene, mainly to serve the growing European population in what was then the colony of Portuguese Angola. An ecclesiastical province is one of the basic forms of jurisdiction in Christian Churches with traditional hierarchical structure, including Western Christianity and Eastern Christianity.
